    Don't mod your xbox's

Two owners of a Hollywood video game store, as well as a third man, were indicted by a federal grand jury Thursday for modifying Xbox video game consoles to disable copy protection, and preloading copyrighted games onto the machines for sale.

The case stems from an investigation by the Entertainment Software Association, whose investigators reported that they had bought a modified Xbox from the store in May 2005.

If convicted, the store owners could face up to 17 years in federal prison.

The case against two California game store owners who allegedly sold modified Xbox's that played pirated games now face up to 17 years in prison. Cnet reports: "Two owners of a Hollywood video game store, as well as a third man, were indicted by a federal grand jury Thursday for modifying Xbox video game consoles to disable copy protection, and preloading copyrighted games onto the machines for sale... If convicted, the store owners could face up to 17 years in federal prison."

Wasn't modification a key selling point to a large demographic of Xbox owners? Hmmm.

You won't get thrown in jail for modding your Xbox, but if you sell then you might.

Only a dumbass would modd an Xbox and sell them in public. They should have done that in private locations (or in their homes). :D

Distribution was just idiotic. They couldn't have had a large market, unless they were blantantly obvious. Which of course they may have been as they were caught.

They would have been safe if they mod it for their own use in discreet.

you can still sell modded xboxs without much worry, as you probably wont get caught, its the fact that they were preloading games onto the xboxes and then selling them that got them in trouble, not just bc they were modding them...
