I'm looking to buy a American retail version Xbox 360 and was wondering if it plays PAL movies. I currently own a regular Xbox and it does play all my movies without any problems. I was going to trade in my Xbox for the 360 but I don't want to loose my PAL player.

Does anyone know if the American Xbox 360 will play PAL movies?

Also, on a side note. Do I need to buy anything extra to play movies for the 360? Like the regular version of the Xbox needed the DVD Remote Kit.

    Any help is appreciated.

The Xbox 360 is region locked, so yea you cant unless you mod it. Why do you even plan on buying an American retail version when your gonna be running PAL version games or movies on it?

I live in Canada but I have some PAL movies that I would like to be played on it. My regular Xbox plays them fine without any mods so I thought the 360 would as well.

All the games will be bought in Canada so they will play, it's just the movies that I'm curious about.

http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/News/Detai...px?NewsId=15048 Heres and article about it, I had to look it up to make sure I was right. So yea it is region locked, you might as well convert those movies to .wmv format and watch it on your 360, thats the only way I guess.

There is one way i can think of in which you can play the PAL movies on the 360. For this you'll need to use a DVD Decrypter after that find the VIDEO AUDIO File. The Video file should be a few GB's as the Audio file will more than likely be 0. Take the video file and burn it to a disc with a dvd burner, make sure if theres an option to change the region code you change it to NTSC. After you've burnt it to a disc test it (Done on your pc)

He could do that but it's like a waste of blank DVD's and time just to watch the movies again unless he's patient. I'd say converting them to wmv is better, no need for blank DVD's you just stream them from your computer.

PAL & NTSC is not only about region codes. It's also about frame rates. PAL is at 25 frames per second and NTSC is at 29.97 frames per second. If your XBOX 360 only takes NTSC, and to be able to play PAL means that you have to chip your XBOX 360. I have a chipped XBOX 360 now it plays both PAL & NTSC.

This seems to be incorrect because I currently own a Xbox that was bought in Canada and has had no modifications. I am able to pay NTSC and also PAL movies on it without any issues. That article says it is unable to play PAL movies so I'm unsure what to believe. I guess I'll just have to buy a 360 and find out.
