I haven't used 5.5 but I'm guessing the tools are better and there are more features and it's probably laid out better. Just a guess though.

You will get some extra filters and tools. But if you do get the newer version, get CS not CS2. Heard alot of mixed reviews about it and wouldn't want your Dad to pay alot for something you dont care for.

If you have high-speed internet just go to www.adobe.com download the 30 day trial and if you think its better buy it

i think you guys understimate the power of 5.5 i used 5.0 for ages only untill recently i upgraded to cs2 yes 5.5 u cant have as many brushes but you canstill obtain the results of what cs2 or 7 can ju make your own brushes thats what i did ..
yes cs2 or cs or even 7 are better but if you play with 5.5 you will find you will learn things a lot quicker cos you have to do brushes and such yourself and adapt to make things like in the tuts you wont b able to do half of them but the results are still able to be made jus with a little more learning and a little more drive to teach yourself such things..
id recommend getting to grips with 5.5 or even like others have stated download the trial version to see if you like it first $600 is a lot of cash if you dont like a programme or even plan on using it for a long time
    just my 2 cents :)

    Almost there...
each PS version has better tools, more filters, more effecient interfaces, and several more options, if your gonna buy PS get CS and not CS2, CS2 needs a more RAM and is a little slow
