umm they announced HD DVD a few years back, the core duo's conroe core was announced quite soem time ago(and it's not really a huge amount better than the athlon X2s) and vista was supposed to be released 2 years ago, people have been talking about windows "longhorn" for close to 5 years though.
conroe itself is good, but from what has been seen so far, it will eb slightly behind the X2s in gaming due to higher system latencies. all that cache they add increases system latencies, they lack an integrated memory controller, and the bus system is slower. it's still a huge improvement over the P4s, but you would need completely new ram, a new motherboard, and a new processor itself.

trust me though, an opteron at 2.8 ghz willl outperform any standard conroe proc.

jeez, i cant wait to see how badass the quad-cores are gonna be; the kentsfield i think its called... i dont remember AMD's quad-core. anyway, but yeah xelink, how much is the opteron that was OCed to 2.8? i dont remember what model Bona-Fide mentioned, but the Conroe's are seeming to be at a good price level. that will in turn probably lower the prices of the opteron's, but time will tell.

depends on if you run your ram on divider and how much time your willing to tweek settings.

people are getting opteron 170s to 2.7-2.9ghz though. you can get a 165 to about the same limit give or take 2 or 3% but you'll be running ram on a divder.

as for why conroe is prejected to eb cheaper is simple, it's cheaper to make and intel allready has the facilities. the 65nm process is more about getting more chips out of a given peice of silicon faster than it is about reducing heat/power consumption(or atleast until intel started cooking up their prescotts to a nice 45C idle). I'd expect that in 6 months, you should be able to get an athlon x2 4600+ for around 350$ maybe 400$ while intels conroe would be priced at 315$ for 2.4ghz. The Conroes get beaten in floating point performance clock/clock when compared with the athlons though due to lacking an integrated memory controller and using the FSB bus as opposed to the HTT bus. Most gamers will be sticking with AMD on the extreme end, I mean heck, who can beat a 3.0 ghz athlon(which should be out soon) in gaming? Also, what's the point of speculating on products that are not already out? maybe I should wait 10 years before upgrading my setup because I heard they are coming out with 10ghz 32 core parts for 300$

should overclock the same, just depends on the overall chip, no the model as of such (in relation to 165, 170 or 175).
You would still have to run a divider for a 170.

not as much of a divider... I'm also fairly confident that the opteron 170s get slightly better silicon on average than the 165s, shouldn't be too much of a diference, but still.

I'm planning on getting an opteron 165 myself and OCing to say 2.4 ghz(hopefully on stock voltage) just want to get to the point where I can drop 500$ all at once(new PSU motherboard and proc).

so far I have about 400 so another week or so unless my parrents give me a loan.

who cares, high clock opterons are typically cheaper, even after counting in the additional cost of ECC ram. you won't be finding an fx 59 for 850$
