Just thought I would throw something out there.

If someone were to come along today and claim a god had spoken to them and that their mission was to bring their new cult or religion to the world they would be classified insane. This is no different to 2000 years ago except that people were uneducated and believed any bull---- someone came up with.

If any of you have read The Odyssey or the Iliad and studied classics you would have seen how many stories and things that happened were passed down from generation to generation in stories, each generation elaborating and changing their story. So why don't people believe in The Odyssey and Greek gods? They sound less pathetic and more realistic.

Personally I think anybody is entitled to believe what they want no matter how ridiculous I think it is but I will admit it. It really really frustrates me to see my good friends who achieve with excellence in subjects like chemistry and physics believe without question what is in the bible and what their parents have brought them up believing. I understand that when you are young and told something enough times you will believe it.

I read up the page that some people were discussing evolutionism. I think that evolutionism is the most logical cause of our existence. There is a considerable amount of proof backing up the theory's behind it. Fossils of humans developing from monkeys and biological links between humans and monkeys looks good to me. I understand some people think that humans are too complex to have just evolved but really it isn't that hard to believe. In a couple of million years a hell of a lot can happen.

More to come later, feel free to pick at my points and argue them with me =)

I understand your point of view perfectly; it's probably the most common view held today.

As a young child I was taught by schools that evolution was the reason we were around, and being so young I really had no reason to question it. As I got older, I started to question the possibility of evolution... it just seemed so unlikely. I did my research on the subject, and my dad and I spent several days calculating the statistical odds of the simplest life-form (some type of bacterium, forget the name) forming by random chance. We got an absurdly high number, which by statistical definition is "impossible". Because of this (and other research), I started to believe in "God-assisted evolution" (the actual term escapes me... but basically it's evolution "helped along" by a God over millions of years). When I really gave myself to Christ at 15, I began to believe in the infallibility of the Bible (bash me all you want, but it IS a part of the religion), which has the story of God creating everything in 7 literal days.

That got a little off-topic... but the reason I wrote it is that just recently Ferret posted about some of the many reasons that evolution is, statistically speaking, impossible (even with billions of years). I really suggest reading it here (the part I'm talking about is the huge block of red text after all the links)

And there you go again. You believe in something with no proof but wont even consider another idea with just the same lack of proof.

Do you actually even know why you, and everyone else believes in a religion?
There's only one true answer, because you earn something by it.
People believe in God for Support, Hope and anything else. Religions give you trust, see it like a toy. There's no such thing as God, God is a creation made by the human brain to give people things that they don't have enough by themselfes. Why do you believe, because you will get in heaven, so you won't go to hell? Does your believe in God gives you support, hope? Strength to pass you through things that are hard for you? You won't believe in a thing as God if it wasn't for those matters, People need to learn to come up for THEMSELFES, they don't need a creation like God for that. I do believe in Jesus, but it's not like he had supernatural powers or anything like that, I do believe he was a very intelligent man, who brought people a comfortable feeling, but nothing more like that. Humans are selfish people mate, and if people didn't NEED God for the feelings he can give, you wouldn't believe in him. God is between the ears.

Hilarious how people that so readily damn religion are scholars of that topic, having the ability to see why people submit (note that each of the major religions requires you to... SUBMIT--real earning there. 'Islam' actually means 'submission' if I'm not mistaken) to a religion. I know for a fact that I didn't join my religion for the creature comforts. I didn't look at Christianity and say "well, this looks like it'll get me through my struggles, let's have at it." I doubt many actual Christians said something along those lines when they joined, either.

See, if I wanted religion for the comforts, why in the f--- didn't I just rob a bank? Ton of money, and done right, wouldn't have gotten caught. Could have lived the rest of my life in a nice Central American country with a huge house right above the beach...

i definatly think god exists. i believe he is responsible for many of the miracles that have happened. plus that is the whole point of faith, believing in something you cant see. so, i dont think things would be the same without god.

I feel this topic has gotten way out of hand by now. To think a simplistic question like "What if God never existed?" from a person who wasn't trying to impose his beliefs on anyone turns into an enormous imposition of idiotic (yes I said idiotic, solve the problem if you have one) atheism and Christianity AND a hint of Islam here and there.

This topic needs to be locked and put away ASAP. Nothing is coming out of this thread that's not only remotely intelligent, but also of any value to us at all.
