I have to agree. Mario and Luigi took over the world when that game came out.

i think a lot of the games that came out once like the Xbox, PS2 and Gamecube hit are concentrating more on technical things like graphics, sound, etc. and less and less on just providing some amazing fun :(

As far as innovation, fun factor, and what it's provided for the industry, I'd have to go with Valve's Half-Life 2. It was one of the first games to sport a super-realistic physics engine, and the gravity gun showed it off beautifully. The way the game's puzzles were so seamlessly implemented with the physics engine in mind speaks volumes of Valve as a developer. The game also promoted the launch of Steam (which I admit SUCKED at launch). Despite those early hiccups, it along with the Half-Life franchise is proving to the industry that game distribution can be done successfully without the need for big name publishers to push games to stores (and claim a big chunk of the profits in return). It's a groundbreaking step for indivicual developers, and should lead to a stronger industry as it gains popularity.

As for the fun factor, well... if you've ever played it, you'd know that doesn't need to be explained.

I would have to say that it would go in this order.

    Doom - Introduced First Person
    Ultima Online - Introduced MMORPG

But I actually think, that to date, the best game is Oblivion. The physics are very realistic. It mixes the RPG elements with the actual "skill" that a person can have in the game. The fun factor is that, beyond any game I think I can say I've ever played next to Halo.
