    This is very good work for a first cut. Over a dark background you can spot some stray white pixels, but that's to be expected. You did quite well on the hair as well as various curves and edges.

    It looks like you have the hang of the polygonal lasso pretty well, so I would suggest moving on to the pen (paths) tool if you're using photoshop. Not sure if the GIMP has one but it might.

    This is quality work, thanks for your time and sharing this with us. :)

    Thanks =D

    The hair was a little tricky, I found i had to cut a bit of the tips out due to background color shining through, so to get it back to a more normal look I cut around it and hit "sharpen" and that seemed to make it look alot cleaner and creeped the tips back out to normal :)

    I'm only new to PS so i'm not sure what is the pen tool? Is it easier to use than the lasso? I'm using CS3 extended..

    Thanks for the positive feedback =)

    The Pen tool is has the icon that looks like an ink pen, should be in the same little category as the text tool. It's very easy to use once you get to know it and will make rendering much more enjoyable, in my opinion.

    Click it, on your options make sure "Paths" and "Pen Tool" are selected in the squares, then click two points on your canvas, like you would with the poly lasso. The two squares on either end are called anchors. Hold Control and use the mouse to move them. Click on the line between any two anchors to create a midpoint. Move these in the same way that you would an anchor; hold Control. Note that this creates a nice curve when put into practice and is very useful for most renders.

    Basically, you just use it like the poly lasso, but instead of clicking so close together, you can click farther apart, then create a midpoint and drag it to create smooth curves.

    If you'd like a few pictures showing how it's done, I'd be happy to oblige. ;)

    Wow yeah I see what you mean, It's quite tricky..It will take me some getting used to.. Pictures would be awesome if you have the time =D

    I can see how it works but I'm finding it hard to put to use.. Do you use this tool to cut an entire render or just curves?

    Thanks heaps for the help!

    This is the render I'm going to do next I think..

    that's really great for the first cut. gj :)

    i personally use pen tool to cut entire render. it's not hard to use, you just need to practice with it. imho, it's better than lasso because you can move any anchor point whenever you want, while on lasso tool you can't move it after placing it on the image.
