is this onboard/front pannel, or a pci card?

windows may have some generic drivers for that, but it may not always be the correct drivers. if a cd came with your computer, and has USB drivers, run that segment of it.

If not, go to your motherboard/computer's(if premade) website, and download the latest USB drivers, and/or chipset drivers.

hm ... to check drivers are installed ...

go to Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > And if you got like a Yellow ! mark next to USB then Right Click > Update drivers ... Search the system - Thats installing generic drivers from WinXP system folder - If it has any that is in order to make it work

IF not , then just follow what master said :)

Yea fairly simple, your computer isn't recognising the drive, for a number of reasons already stated above. try them methods if it dosn't work i suggest trying a different usb device it could be that. gl.

edit also if ur plugging in a ipod, to a PC they are usualy as usless as a paraplegics legs, often they dont connect for some reason, mostly coz its a music device not a information device as often used.

try it in a lap top if thats the case, they work fine.
