Well, I have been a dedicated windows user forever but I know linux is better in every aspect...So I want to change...I am thinking of upgrading to ubuntu....The problem is my cdburner is broken and I am also worried that if I just download the .iso and unzip it to my hd than run it that I will lose all my ----. Is this true? do i need to do something to save my stuff before i upgrade to linux? any help>
you should always backup ur files be4 upgrading OS but it might delete your files depends on how you install it. I've never used Linux so I wouldn't know.
Linux is better than windows in every respect except for GAMES! And PHOTOSHOP! And GRAPHICS! Funny, because that's what this site is all about.
Linux is really for more advanced computer users, I don't see how you find it better "in every aspect".
I just heard it was better in every aspect...and I know it's definatly more stable and custumizable, with wine you can run photoshop and other things. thats besides the point, I am just looking for some help not a debate.
The problem comes in with games...not many games support Linux. But Linux is the only way to go for servers and workstations that demand stability and security. *Moved to Computing
Isn't that ironic that most games don't support linux, but alot of good game servers use a distro of linux ?
Personally i prefer linux to windows but i have to have dual boot just for photoshop if photoshop would work on linux i wouldn't have to use windows. I've never tried Ubuntu but i've heard it isn't bad, i like debian out of them all.
well, you can use GIMP [GIMP], and there is a program out there that will make GIMP look like PS. [GIMPShop] also, I've used Ubuntu. It is a great distro based on debian. If you don't mind waiting, you can order a free cd off their website [Ubuntu]
buy a cheep second hardrive!!! put linux on the 2nd HD... have both... its a lot easier than runnning dual boot and a lot less stressfull and prone to risk.
if you're new to linux, might i suggest knoppix [knoppix]. it is a bootable distro that will fit on a cd. boot to the cd, bam, you're in linux. great to try it out before installing. you can also use damnsmalllinux or feather linux, and both of those are small enough to fit on a usb thumb drive, but don't come with the goodies.
for all of you out there that think changing to linux means ... no more photoshop & no more games.... look here !!!!!!! http://www.winehq.org/ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.... open source rulez.............................
