I am thinking of doing some upgrading on my one year old PC. Currently its running with a Pentium 4, Windows XP, 200GB hard disk (using half), 512mb RAM and a good NVidia Ge-force gfx card. I have about £200 to spend, but wont buy for a few more months. I mainly game or use internet, so performance is really what I want, and I plan on getting rid of quite a lot of videos stored on my PC, so this should hopefully free up some disc space (every episode of Futurama, Family Guy and Monty Python, plus a load of films...I have most on DVD anyway, so there really is no need for them on my PC, lol)

Just wondering what people suggested, and also any ways of getting my current spec running faster. :)

EDIT: SEE LATER POST FOR CORRECT SPEC!!!

    1. Get 1GB - Doesnt cost alot nowadays - Can get a decent one for like £30-£40 [I got my Corsair XMS 1GB for 40 i believe :) ]

    OR

You can get 2GB which is like £80 if you dont plan on getting a new PC in 2007

    2. A 160GB hard drive - just to e ase the pressure of the main 200GB one - Thats around £60 odd

The rest just save just in case :)

    3. What motherboard and CPU you got at the moment?

All i can think of at the moment

I could use more specs then this.

What type of RAM do you have? DDR or DDR2. There is a difference. Also, are you running 1x 512MB or 2x 256MB.

What interface does your video card use? AGP or PCI-E. Also define 'good'.

How many slots of RAM does your motherboard hold? 2 or 4?

I don't really see a need for a new hard drive.

In conclusion, if your video card is PCI-E, and your RAM is DDR2, then I suggest a Core 2 Duo E'6300 and a new motherboard.

    lol

Type Dxdiag in the run command - And print screen that - OR get Everest Ultimate Edition trial - That works :)

    and hm ... *thinks*

C2D + new mobo will cost more than £200 here in UK coz he might need new RAM and stuff :D

Wow..hmm, thanks DS for the Run command, but it shows how much of a noob I truly am...
You see when I bought my PC i spend nearly three months scanning for bargains, and nearly bought twice before settling on the one I have. So I obviously got a bit confused, lol, because I do NOT have pentium four...um I have an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ at 2.2GHz. lol

Anyway I didnt want to hassle with PrntScrn so heres all the stats:

    System Model: 939Dual-SATA2
    OS: XP Home 5.1
    Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3500+, 2.2GHz
RAM: 1024MB (doesnt say DDR so presume this means its not...)
    Directx: 9.0c
GFX Card: NVidia GeForce 7300 GS, 512MB, with integrated RAMDAC
    Sound: Realtek AC97

    Hope that helps :)

well first of all that says you have an amd and 1024mb of ram which is completely different from what your first post says. it says you are using socket 939 meaning you use DDR ram. you should probably upgrade your vid card if you game, you can get a 7600GT off newegg for $79 after rebate.

I would say just upgrade your video card. Your processor isn't outdated yet, it has plenty of performance to run just about everything out there.

There is one little bit of information I need, your Graphic Interface, it will be either AGP or PCI-E. To get this, download cpu-z, open it, click the 'mainboard' tab, and look down towards the bottom where it says 'graphic interface'. Then respond to me what it says

I'd suggest the x1900GTO, or the 7600GT. What ever amount of money you want to dish out should be your decision.

any idea where to buy from in the UK, only both of these seem cheap. And how much of a boost would these give my PC?
