    ignore him.

as far as I know, pretty much every x2 3600+ in the retail market is AM2 based, and as such requires DDR2 NOT DDR.

Also the fact that he refered to a video card by the quantity of vRAM as opposed to it' model number or GPU shows ignorance.

an FX 5700 could have had 256mb vRAM, but it would be utterly destroyed by a 256mb Radeon x1900XT or 7900GT

for the most aprt, dont' worry abotu vRAM buy the card by the GPU alone and typically "enough" VRAM is included.

the basic diea behind a GFX card is for the GPU(graphics processing unit) to process game data for out put.

typically data is loaded to the vRAM(video RAM) and then transfered to the GPU. The faster it can be transfered, the faster the GPU can do work on it.

when looking at GFX cards, the two main components to look at are the GPU and the vRAM.

GPU - how many functional units it has, it's clock speed, it's arhitecture.
vRAM - capacity, speed, latency, bus width.

this is the best bang/$ GFX cards you can get while being close to budget

So, are you going to get a video card, or just stick with integrated graphics? if you don't do any gaming, you probably don't need a video card.

you'de need a new motherboard, no "modern CPU" works with Socket A boards... those came out in what, 2000?

if you live near a Fry's electronics then they sometimes have c2d e4300+board combos for like 150USD

    as for a canadian system...

    AMD semrpon 3000+ $70
    http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/Sea...7092&CatId=2353

    board $80
    http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/Sea...5167&CatId=2320

    RAM
    1GB(2*512mb) RAM $100
    http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/Sea...8745&CatId=2261

    Video card
    http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku...acture=SAPPHIRE

if you could spend more, I could get you some stuff that's a fair amount better, but 400CAD is hard to do when all canadian supplier assrape you w/ pricing. I'm still 30$ over too.

or rather... all non-American retailers atleast, consumer electronics are fairly cheap inthe US because of the intense comercial competition.

if you live in toronto, or the gta, don't buy from tigerdirect. it's so much more expensive.

    try canadacomputers.com

    Canadacomputers.com
    cbit.com
    ncix.com

WAY cheaper than TD. Also, if you're going to 'upgrade' it with that stuff, you're better off just building a new one, considering the case will likely be custom, not standard ATX/mATX.
