Does anyone else notice that there are WAY to many graphics sites popping up all over the place?
It seems that anyone and everyone who's into design, has their forum.

Personally, I think it's too much, and I'd say about 10% of these sites are actally worth browsing through.

I closed my site about 6 months ago, as I realised it was mearly adding to the bulging mass of sub-par design websites that exist on the net.

    Anyway, that's just my opinon.
    Anyone else?

damn right. The only forums i visit are ones with skilled people, a lot of the people opening gfx sites suck tbh.

I strongly agree, I don't mind real design sites that offer graphic design and multi media services however. Infact I used to have a site and I called it a 'gfx' site, but I closed it when I realised I was just adding to the other predictable 'gfx' sites. Yet another thing that annoys me is this SOTW everyone does. FFS give it a rest.

    Signitures
Many of these design sites, are mainly if not all to do with signatures? What are signatures? Something that you put under your post. I mean common, is that really worth making a site about. I suppose a lot of people (me being one) when starting out with photoshop automaticaly get into sigs. But a while ago I realised that there was absoulutely no point whatsoever in making them.

    Real design is:
    -Web design:
This is one of the main areas of online 'design' or as some like to say 'gfx'. This can bring you real money instead of credits.

    -Illustration and logo design:
Yet again, this is real design, it will bring in money, unlike 'sigs'

And there are many many more, but the point im trying to get across is that sigs are not real design. And if you look up to people that make great sigs, then they really are setting a bad example. I understand that this community its self is built with the purpose of renders for sigs, but the only reason it has become so popular is that it offers something new. Not just 'oh its another design site that does sig of the week and has a predictable template and forum skin lets click X'.

    ---

Oh, errm I think I went a bit mad there lol!

    ^I agree with himster.

I hate 'sites' that just have a forum.
I don't bother looking into them if they don't have a real homepage unless it's a full site that doesn't depend on their forums.
    Well, most sites.

Another problem that arrises with the existance of all these sites is that the freelance artists/designers have their sites "drowned out" but all the "gfx" websites.

I know from first-hand experience that professional graphic designers find it very difficult to find work in the online marketplace.

I'm okay now though, I work with a "real life" mulitmedia design buisness :)

your correct himster but IMO i believe they make them for either , socialising, or just something to keep you busy but yet there are to many,

wot i hate the worst is the repeative use of GFX and DESIGNS.

    eg.

    fusion-designs
    hectic-gfx

so over used, need fresh names.

The think I find most annoying is the design sites that look utterly horrible.
I mean, how can you create a site about graphics, and have almost no idea about the subject.

I'll try and find some examples (hopefully the people who own them don't read this thread)

Many of them are individual sites, where the creator uses as a place to put his portfolio, and show all the work he has done. I am thinking about making a graphics site soon, ats that what im going to put on it.

    sigsource can compete.

maybe not by member count but the quality of the members.

the skill level surpasses that of 98% of gr.
also community wise, everyone is great and gives the desired cnc since they all know wtf they are talking about.

    quality of quantity my friend

    I really agree about that..

There are 1000's of forums that are just the same, that don't have an original thing..

I wanted to start a GFX-site too, but i knew that there were already so many, so it's very hard to be that one that's succesful. That's why i started a Dutch one, because there aren't much Dutch.
