Emo was started quite a long ass time ago. The version you see of it today is the twisted and warped version MTV, wannabe bands and Hot Topic have created to increase sales.

I dont know the exact band names, but it was a general music genre where the artists would write about their life, and their music would be upbeat if thats what was going on in their life, or sad. It could have an upbeat rap type tempo, or a deep, dark classic gothic music (not this metal type stuff, im talking old school gothic rock, melodic, deep, and dark lyrics). They were really versatile in their lyrics and their beats/rhythms.

Over the course of when it started (about 20-30 years ago) till about the early 90s the emo genre remained as it had started. Some industrial/grunge bands were considered emo (like Nirvana) because of their deep, depressing lyrics (if youve listened to Nirvana, you know what im talking about). This inspired the media to exagerrate this. They took the gothic sub-culture (which they had previous stereotyped to the metal loving, twisted genres you see today in movies and media) and altered it to be a more emotionally intact kind of feeling. Tight clothes would symbolize how the person feels constrained (which is actually how they put it), hair that covers the eyes because its said your eyes can show your true emotion, dark lyrics to reflect their depression, etc.

Like most genres, it started out as being itself, and eventually was twisted by the media to become what they wanted it to be. Greenday wasnt always this punk/rock/emo type music, they used to be pretty standard rock/grunge/punk styling. Now they changed their outward appearance, their instrumentals, their lyrics, etc. because its what brings them the money.

The same thing happened to the emo genre as it did to sport oriented people (jocks); rich kids who have a high self esteem (preps); metal loving, dark hearted, menacing, twisted kids (goths); preppy dumb blondes (cheerleaders, i swear they try to be dumb in my area, there is no way humanly possible without mental instability they can be as stupid as they are); etc.

It was origionally an expressive motion of some bands/people back in the 70-80s and it eventually became this sorrowing, wannabe manacing stereotype. Kids who become "emo" and then wonder why no one likes them makes me laugh, it shows they did it for popularity (and its a huge problem out where i am, like everyone is punk/emo and we live in one of the richest areas in colorado where the average house is about 450K and the average pay/yr is about 125K). Emo stands for emotional, meaning the ability to share and reflect emotions, its Hot Topic, MTV, and bands that decided to change it for profit to wannabe pathetic kids. Its the same thing that happened to bi/homosexual on the lower/mid status around here, its like all of a sudden cool to be gay/bi unless your a relatively well off family.
