a pretty good one, should play every game more or less max at a moderate screen resolution of 1280 or 1024, while providing an upgrade route to SLi if needed

opteron 165 (which you should be able to push to FX60 levels at no extra cost)
    2GB DDR500sdRAM
DFI SLI-D(he'd want the upgrade route and I hear the have higher HTT maxes)
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/CustRatingRe...N82E16817159056
(above is combo with opteron 165)
GeForce 7900GT(2 if you for some odd reason feel the need)
decent case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList....rice=&maxPrice= (your pick suggest antec though)
    etc...

or you could wait until mid june for AM2... and then the core2 duos

err, um, yeah. Do yourself a favour: the FX-60's are costing about, err $1000? If you buy that now, you're an absolute fool.

Get patience and wait for the Core 2's. Soon we'll see the AM2's preformance, then we may suggest one of those, but for now, looks like the Core 2's are going to be the leaders until at least Q1 2007. I believe the Conroe (Core 2 Duo) E6700 beat the FX-60 in just about every benchmark, and is planned to be around $530. If that is too cheap for you, you can always get the Core 2 Duo Extreme Edition.

But whatever choice, wait for either AMD's or Intel's next generation of chips, they're much better.
