If you have a router, set the router up and have the printer on one computer and the other that computer with printer share on. They have to be both on the same network so you will need to have a network setup and you need to be able to use the one computer to print through. It's not too hard. If you need to know more than I will try to tell you more. If you have MSN, or AIM its... FlipsideAKW AIM [email protected] MSN
Can you post it here AKW? like a little tutorial. Unless it takes too much..cuz I kinda need it also..
Its fiarly simple really. Do exactly waht he said and I'm good with networking if you need more help.
Diablo... others.... All you need to do is get all your computers on the same network VIA going to "My Network Places" (YES IT CAN BE A DOMAIN WITH DOMAIN CONTROLLERS IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING) then you will see, in Windows XP, a thing on the left side of the screen, "Set up a Small Home or Office Network". You will want to click that and answer the question, making sure that you click "Turn on Printer Sharing". Then you will finish that all up. When you get that all done, you can go to your other computer with the disk you made from that computer (If you made a network setup disk) or you can go to the other computer and set it up the same way with it on the same network, so when you set them both up, the one with no printer connected to it, just go to print (No matter what program you use, this is for initial setup). Then you will see that it wants you to add a printer. Just add the printer through network or domain. Then you will see a list of computers, or something like that on your network, just select, obviously, the one with the printer. Then it will show you the networked printer. By then you click it, it will install the printer software from the base print-server computer to the computer with no printer so that you got the drivers. Then it will be ready to print through the server at any time you want to print. HAPPY PRINTING.
Or if you wanna be lazy and have some money to burn. get an actual print server http://www.newegg.com/ProductSort/SubCateg...SubCategory=387
Why waste your money? You have to set it up about the same way.. it costs yet, another port I do believe.. if not wireless.. so constant bandwidth + slower... the computer does the same thing without extra software and you dont have to spend more... so why not just do that?
the only reason you would get a print server is if you do not have a dedicated computer, always on... like me, I wouldnt have a computer that the printer is on, that i can leave on 24/7... the print server takes care of that. I don't believe it will slow anything down, actually. The router should be able to sort all that out, preventing traffic jams...
Whats it going to slow down? My router is a G router, 54 mbps. My internet supposedly goes around 6 mbps, leaving 48 mbps left there. Shouldnt slow anything down. Even with a B router, 11mbps, you still have plently of bandwidth. Most servers dont send webpages at those internet speeds anyways, so meh. As I said, only if you had money to waste
Okay, the wireless you have at home is ping. It continuously pings your router so that it can tell what you want it to do. If you have a corded connection it stops this from happening. The backup of data going through your router actually makes the router slow down a bit. Me, I uncap my modem, so I get goood speed... so I can tell when this happens even on a Wireless G. So, you CAN tell if you know what you are talking about. Also, if you hit it in the right time, the ping hasn't happened and it slows the print process down.
