Well... I need to build a small server (just to show how a server would work) and would like some help 1. I would like to know what caracteristics are the most valuable in this kind of computers (i. e. what type of processor, ram, hd, etc.) 2. A build with the "ideal" server specs 3. A build with the best server components with a budget of around 1000$ (keep in mins it is just to show how they work) Thanks in advance
Well, you need a large case. 1GB-2GB of RAM minimum. Intel Xeon processor, or any other moderate server CPU's. Lots of hard disk space, some servers use the SCSI interface offering spindle speeds of 15,000 RPM. Integrated graphics will do. Integrated sound will do aswell. A regular optical (DVD-R for $20 should do fine). Also a floppy would do some good, for drivers and the likes. And you'll need to purchase an OS, Linux Redhat, Windows Server 2003 or whatever you want. Also a fast connection, 1MB should be fine for a home server but in the real server industry, 100MB some providers will offer. Also a server motherboard, shouldn't set you back that much. All I can think of, feel free to add.

Like theArchitect has said... For 1000$, I'm sure you can select some nice parts on newegg. Myself just has a P2 333mhz running as a DL/FTP server on MS Server 2000.
Uhh, just because it's a server doesn't mean it has to have loads of space. Think about it, my clan web server that I own gives me a max of 600MB (very cheap 1-time payment), and I can barely reach 300MB. What is more important is more RAM. If the server has high (like, lets say gamerenders), I would look to a minimum of four gb. I'm going to suggest an AMD server because it is a bit cheaper. server CPU- Xeon or opteron(or else you go into non-x86 and i can't really help you, maybe something ultraspark based like niagra) 1+GB RAM, preferably ECC and registered/buffered server board and that's about it. ideal large high end server- multi socket server(prefereably 8+ opterons or non x86 CPUs, on the cheaper side dual kentsfields work well) A LOT of RAM all ECC registered buffered etc. solid state memory for fast data access large raid array of 15kRPM harddrives
