Ok, I am on my old computer and I am having a few very serious computer problems. I am trying to fix this old computer so I can use it as a project computer for gaming and such. Problem Number 1 ------------------------- It takes many tries for Windows to boot. I will turn the power button on, then it will act as if in standby mode, with the orange light. I will turn it back off, then on. It will eventually boot Windows after doing this about 20 times. It gots on your nerves VERY fast. Problem Number 2 ------------------------- Windows will boot, then I log in as normal. The computer will then randomly restart, with no warning. Then while booting, it will run a disk check. It says something about an incorrect time stamp on some picture file....But whatever... This also is VERY frustrating. I am typing this as fast as I can as we are speaking.. Problem Number 3 -------------------------- Randomly I will get this message: I think it is spyware from the old hard drive that I just put in here, So I am running Ad-Aware. Problem Number 4 -------------------------- This is probably the least serious problem of them all. When I am on a site with scrollbars, when I scroll, it lags badly. It also takes quite a while for images to load. I am using Firefox. If you have any advice or help whatsoever, PLEASE POST HERE! Help Is GREATLY appreciated. -+anthem
Number 4 is due to a bad ISP or connection. For the others I would run a full system scan with Ad-Aware SE ----- and delete anything that comes up.
Update on problem #3: I ran adaware and it picked up spyware called Alexa But the internet connection works fine on my other computer
for number 3 goto start/control panel/performance and maintence/adminstrative tools/services/messenger and disable the messenger I HAVE to disable it everytime I reformat XP otherwise I get those popup ads
might be spyware/viruses within your system. I had my computer restarting randomly, I fixed it by reformatting. problem 1 and 2 might be due to a bad PSU (Power Supply)
lagging on scrolling often has to due with video or memory. --------------------------- ok looking at all 4 problems i would strongly advise reformating. if that doesnt work try changing out your mem/video card/ PSU (if you have multiple sticks of memory test each on its own. -------------------------- i think your problems are along the mem/PSU side of things. hope i helped ya sumwhat
Possible and likely, but due to the fact that it is an old computer, I assumed that he had an older internet connection. My bad.
Definitely Reformat and don't forget to install all the latest drivers and SP2. That will get fix most of the problems. Also help you figure out if it is a hardware problem left.
Ok, alot of people are saying that it may be a PSU problem. I have an old 250 watt PSU laying around, the one in this computer is 200 watts. Should I put the 250 watt one in and try it out?
