    Crazy Taxi:

Sega® of America today announced that it has optioned the rights of its arcade and console hit "Crazy Taxi™" to Goodman/Rosen Productions. Renowned producer-director Richard Donner will direct and produce the action film, which is currently being developed for a future summer release. Further details on the "Crazy Taxi" movie have not yet been announced.

"I loved playing 'Crazy Taxi,' and I realized immediately that it had the potential to be a big summer event movie," said Producer/Director Richard Donner. "Sega's game franchise has the perfect mix of action, humor, and great characters to translate to the big screen."

"'Crazy Taxi' is one of Sega's top-selling franchises," said Jane Thompson, director of licensing, Sega of America. "The 'Crazy' Taxi movie will help us turn our hit game into a major entertainment franchise. Also, now that Sega video games are available on all video game consoles, an even greater audience will come to enjoy the 'Crazy Taxi' game before the release of the motion picture."
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LOS ANGELES (The Hollywood Reporter) -Producer-director Richard Donner will be in the driver's seat of "Crazy Taxi," a feature version of Sega's best-selling video game.
Goodman/Rosen Prods. optioned the movie rights from Sega and brought it to the Donners Co. Donner will direct and executive produce the action film, which is being developed for a future summer release.

"We realize Sega is a giant worldwide brand and that 'Crazy Taxi' has been a hit at arcades and on video game systems," said Goodman/Rosen principal Gary Goodman, who will serve as a producer on the film. "We feel we can turn this game into a mass-market picture."

"This property already has built-in awareness in the U.S., Japan and Europe; our job now is to make a good movie," said Goodman/Rosen principal Barry Rosen, who is also producing.

The "Crazy Taxi" games have sold more than 1 million units worldwide since the franchise debuted early last year. "Crazy Taxi" and "Crazy Taxi 2," which shipped in May, have sold more than 768,000 units and generated more than $27 million combined on Dreamcast (news - web sites) alone, according to NPD TRSTS Video Games Service. "Crazy Taxi" is the No. 3-selling title to date for the Dreamcast console, according to NPD.

The first game, which is set in San Francisco, is available on Dreamcast and PlayStation 2 (news - web sites) and is headed for Nintendo (news - web sites)'s Gamecube in the fall. Sega recently released a Dreamcast sequel, set in New York, and is bringing the franchise to Gamecube and Microsoft's Xbox (news - web sites). The 3-D racing games introduce a cast of colorful cab drivers and reward players for delivering customers from location A to location B as fast as possible by any means necessary. Cabs careen through crowded streets and sidewalks, rush through subway tunnels and jump onto rooftops to make better time.

"The film will retain the visceral, high-energy feeling of the games," said Ford Lytle Gilmore, a producer working with Goodman/Rosen. "Fans of the game will expect a certain type of action and humor, and we'll deliver that, but we're making a movie that anyone will be able to sit down and enjoy."

Said Donner: "I plan on doing a lot of experimentation with this film, trying things no one's really played around with, to really put the audience in the front or back seat of the taxi during the action sequences. You can do a lot more with the camerawork in a movie to make the action sequences feel like those in the game."

Donner said he believes the game will translate well to the big screen because it is grounded in the real world.

"While a lot of video games are set in science fiction environments or fantasy worlds, 'Crazy Taxi' is set in New York City with a Russian cab driver," Donner said. "If you do this right, it'll be a lot of fun."

Sega will serve as a consultant throughout the film's production and might incorporate original characters scripted for the film in a future 'Crazy Taxi' video game. At the very least, Sega will try to time a future video game release with the film or home video window.

" 'Crazy Taxi' is one of the biggest franchises to come out of Sega in the last two years," said Jane Thompson, director of licensing and character development at Sega of America. "The 'Crazy Taxi' movie is a very important element in turning this best-selling video game franchise into an entertainment franchise."

Sega, which switched from a console game maker to a third-party publisher in February when it discontinued its Dreamcast video game console, has plenty of other franchises that could translate to television or film.

"We have a lot of properties that have entertainment potential, including 'Space Channel 5,' 'Virtua Fighter' and 'Jet Grind Radio,' " Thompson said. "Film and TV provides us with another avenue to expand our video games into entertainment."

With additional "Crazy Taxi" video game sequels in the works, the film has franchise potential.

"When I did 'Lethal Weapon,' it was a one-shot deal; the sequels didn't come about until after it was a success," Donner said. "We're focusing on this movie, and we'll make it as good as we can. If the audience enjoys it, there's always the potential for additional stories."

Although the success of "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" should help "Crazy Taxi," Donner is in no hurry to rush the film out to capitalize on other video game-to-movie successes.

"There are going to be a lot of video game-based movies behind 'Crazy Taxi,' and probably a few in front of it, but that won't affect this film," Donner said. "When we have a solid script and we're ready to do it, we'll do it."

This marks the second video game catch for Goodman/Rosen, which is also working with Fireworks Entertainment and 4 Kids Entertainment to turn Nintendo's "Perfect Dark" game into a TV series as early as fall 2002 and into a future film franchise

    Devil May Cry:

    Description
The success of the Resident Evil movie, and to some extent that of the Tomb Raider movie, demonstrated that not all game-to-movie conversions had to follow the Final Fantasy road to bankrupcy. Whether Milla Jovovich and Angelina Jolie were the real reasons for the movies' success or not is still a subject open to discussion, but they did prove that it could be done. The movie industry did not need much encouragment and now a very large list of games is waiting to hit the silver screen. So if a Crazy Taxi film is in development, why not a Devil May Cry cinema port. In fact that is what game movies are slowly becoming, another version of the game.

The rights to produce the movie have been awarded to a Japanese company called Gaga Communications, which is also working on an Onimusha flick. The DMC movie won't even go into full production until 2005 - by which time, it is almost certain, a new Devil May Cry installment will have been released.

The game does have the potential to become an interesting movie, after all Dante's one liners are the stuff Hollywood is made of. The question on which the success of the film may depend, is whether the movie-makers will be able to capture the unique atmosphere which has become the DMC trademark.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gaga Communications have inked a deal with Capcom to make a movie based on game hit Devil May Cry. Devil May Cry is an action game whose half-human, half-demon hero, Dante, battles demons in the human world together with his female companion Lucia. The game has been a huge hit in North America and Capcom intends to exploit this popularity with a major Hollywood film. The budget is thought to be in the $40m range with a release being planned for 2005

"Based on the success of “House of the Dead,” I believe “Dungeon Siege” contains major crossover potential because of its unique blend of action and fantasy, on the order of “Lord of the Rings.”

    Far Cry:

Crytek and Ubisoft's PC shooter will be fodder for German filmmaker Uwe Boll.

The Hollywood Reporter reported Friday that German producer/director Uwe Boll has added another game adaptation to his slate. This time around, the House of the Dead director has optioned the film rights to Far Cry. According to the Reporter, Boll plans to begin production next year, with the film's budget currently being targeted around $25 million. GameSpot spoke with Boll about the Far Cry film and about adapting games for the big screen.

In comments to the Reporter, producer Shawn Williamson revealed new details about the "nonhuman enemies" Ubisoft has stated are in the game. "There are elements of The Island of Dr. Moreau in this game, thanks to the tropical setting and the genetic experiments that are taking place on the island," said Williamson. "The story will be incredibly frightening." Williamson will produce the film under his Brightlight Pictures banner.

    http://news.com.com/Microsoft+signs+movie+..._3-5842868.html

Microsoft may finally be getting into a business where "blue screen of death" could actually be a good thing.

The company is going from writing code to writing a movie script adapting the "Halo" video-game franchise, according to a report yesterday in Daily Variety.

It's wrapping up a million-dollar deal to hire Alex Garland, the writer of the movie "28 Days Later" and the novel "The Beach," to bring "Halo" to the big screen, according to the report.

Variety said it confirmed the deal with Creative Artists Agency, which represents Microsoft and Garland in Hollywood. The agency hired Xbox co-creator Seamus Blackley in 2003 to represent video-game makers in Hollywood deals.

Microsoft would not comment on the matter yesterday, except to say that "Halo" is a hotly sought-after property in the entertainment world. It added that it has not made any official movie announcements.

"Halo 2" went on sale in November and became the second best-selling game in the United States last year, losing out only to the latest installment in the popular "Grand Theft Auto" video-game series. "Halo 2" has sold 6.4 million copies worldwide since its release, bringing the sales total for both "Halo" games to 12.8 million units. The original "Halo" went on sale in 2001.

According to Variety, Microsoft is planning to develop the script on its own and take it to movie studios only after it is complete. Such a move in Hollywood is unusual for a tech company, the report said.

Microsoft likely wants to make sure that the "Halo" brand isn't diluted, said Matt Rosoff, an analyst covering the company at Directions on Microsoft, a Kirkland-based independent research firm.

"This is one completely new piece of intellectual property that Microsoft owns, and because of that they want to make sure they have control over the image," he said. "They've created this valuable franchise and there aren't many of those out there."

To be sure, there is little else in Microsoft's product library that could similarly inspire Hollywood. "The Adventures of SharePoint Portal Server 2003," anyone? Anyone?

So far, there has been little public mention of what actors could star in the movie or what the plot could cover. The "Halo" story line involves the conflicts between humans intent on colonizing outer space and an army of alien species that wants to destroy mankind. The hero is a character named "Master Chief," a super-soldier leading the charge to protect Earth from the encroaching aliens.

Film adaptations of video games haven't been consistently successful at the box office. The film version of the "Final Fantasy" video-game series made only $11.4 million in its opening weekend in theaters. The film "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" opened in first place at the box office, however, and went on to clear the $100 million mark in ticket sales.

The movie "Resident Evil" bombed in 2002 but its sequel released last year hit the top of the charts. And "Super Mario Bros.," released in 1993, made only $21 million — less than half its production budget — in the United States.

    Hitman:

When the sci-fi epic Chronicles of Riddick hit movie theaters last summer, it arrived alongside the release of its game tie-in, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay for the Xbox (and later for the PC). Though the film was tepidly received, the game was a success, enjoying brisk sales and earning critical kudos, including a nomination for GameSpot's 2004 Game of the Year.

Part of the reason for Escape from Butcher Bay's success was the fact that Riddick star Vin Diesel is a lifelong gamer. The actor--who has publicly professed his love for games going all the way back to the paper-and-pencil Dungeons & Dragons--formed his own game production company, Tigon Studios, to oversee Butcher Bay's development by Swedish studio Starbreeze. The seriousness with which he took the Riddick game project is evident in the final product: Butcher Bay's voice acting and storyline were hailed as top-notch, and its innovative stealth-action gameplay coined the term "first-person stabber."

Now Diesel is poised to blur the line between games and film once again. Today's issues of the Hollywood Reporter and Variety are both reporting that the burly, bald badass has signed on to play Agent 47, the titular assassin of Eidos' Hitman series, on the big screen. Both trades say Diesel has struck a deal to star in and executive-produce 20th Century Fox's upcoming Hitman film project. Charles Gordon (Die Hard) and Adrian Askarieh (the forthcoming Spy Hunter) will produce the project, along with Eidos vice president of marketing and communications Paul Baldwin. No director is currently attached, and the film would not hit theaters until 2006--at the earliest.

[UPDATE] While the Hitman film is already locked down, Reuters is reporting that Diesel may be gunning for the game license as well. The trade said that Tigon Studios is preparing to hold talks with Eidos and Hitman's developer, Danish studio Io Interactive (Freedom Fighters), to have Diesel play 47 in a future Hitman game which would ship alongside the film. However, Diesel would not appear in Hitman: Blood Money, which is slated to ship for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 2 this fall.

One of Eidos' most popular series, the Hitman games follow the murderous exploits of Agent 47, a genetically enhanced assassin. Beginning with 2000's Hitman: Codename 47 for the PC, the Hitman series has followed 47 on dozens of international missions to eliminate various criminals, gun runners, drug dealers, crime lords, and other assorted unsavory elements. All installments of the game let players dispatch their targets with a variety of lethal methods, ranging from sniper rifles to poison vials.

Konami will participate in the production of the film from script supervision, monsters' design and sound creation to accurately recreating the universal appeal of the game. Christophe Gans, who directed the blockbuster epic Brotherhood of the Wolf as well as Crying Freeman, has been appointed as the director of the Silent Hill movie, "Silent Hill is a groundbreaking game which atmosphere has mesmerized millions of gamers all over the world, it is scary and clever. Its images have received high acclaim in the North America and European markets, labeled "THE MASTER OF HORROR ADVENTURE" with its total combined sales of over four million copies in Japan, the United States and Europe.

The Silent Hill movie we are told is well on its way to being made. We have kept this info under our hat for awhile since we didn't want to spoil anything. Basically what we know is that the script is being written by Roger Avery, he announced recently that he is coming to Toronto to film. The is no official storyline out yet, but it is described as a mother and daughter’s quest to discover the secrets of the seemingly abandoned town "Silent Hill".

We know that the producing team is the same as the Matrix and that the film will have somewhere in the range of a 50 million dollar budget. The very cool part is that at this time we are told that Christopher Gans from Brotherhood of the Wolf fame will be directing. If you have not seen Brotherhood of the Wolf you need to, great film. The creature designer is Patrick Tatopolus who is originally from France . He did "Underworld 1 and currently 2.

We are keeping our ear to the ground as more information rolls in. If you have something you would like to contribute drop us a line. As with anything movies come and go, and so do talent lists. This movie is still in early stages and although our sources are solid, things can change, as it does we will let you know

Paramount Pictures hired Berg to direct the film and write the script with videogame writer JT Petty and John J. McLaughlin. Michael Ovitz will produce the movie, with Peter Berg, Michael Clancy, and Yves Guillemot serving as executive producers.

"Splinter Cell" is one of Ubisoft's most successful 'stealth' action games. The story follows the adventures of Sam Fisher, a government spy who is hired to stop a high-tech threat by infiltrating a terrorist group.

Paramout Pictures has acquired the film rights for Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell and hired Peter Berg to direct and also co-write the script with JT Petty and John J. McLaughlin. Michael Ovitz will produce the movie, with Peter Berg, Michael Clancy, and Yves Guillemot serving as executive producers.

Splinter Cell follows the steps of movie adaptations such as Tomb Raider, Doom, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell follows the adventures of Sam Fisher, a highly trained secret operative of the NSA's secret arm: The Third Echelon. The videogame series grants players access to the highest echelons of national security, where shadowy operatives have the freedom to do whatever it takes to safeguard America.

MTV Films Announces Agreement to Acquire Worldwide Film Rights to Midway's The Suffering
    Company: Midway
NEW YORK, NY - September 8, 2005 – MTV Films, a division of Viacom Inc. (NYSE: VIA, VIAB), today announced that it has acquired an option on the worldwide film rights to the award-winning, action-horror videogame property The Suffering® from Surreal Software, a subsidiary of Midway Games Inc. (NYSE: MWY), a leading interactive entertainment industry publisher and developer.

In The Suffering, which was released in April 2004, the player controls the prisoner Torque, a hardened inmate sentenced to die for a murder he may or may not have actually committed. A sequel, The Suffering: Ties That Bind™ is scheduled to ship in September 2005 and lets players delve into the perverse world of Torque's sanity to discover his past and struggle to control his future. Both games were developed by Midway's internal studio, Surreal Software.

MTV Films is working in conjunction with Stan Winston and Brian Gilbert from Stan Winston Productions and Jason Lust and Rick Jacobs from Circle of Confusion on The Suffering's development as a feature film project. MTV Films' Senior Director Jason Weiss, who brought the project to the company, Gregg Goldin and David Gale will be developing on behalf of MTV Films.

"We are very excited to be working hand in hand with Midway to translate this innovative game into an edge-of-your-seat film," said David Gale, Executive Vice President, MTV Films. "Gaming is such a huge part of the culture for MTV's audience it makes perfect sense for us to work with Midway, Stan Winston and Circle of Confusion on bringing The Suffering to life as a feature film."

"The Suffering is a true action-horror experience with plenty of disturbing and twisted creatures," said Alan Patmore, president, Surreal Software. "We are extremely happy to be working with MTV Films to bring the terror to the big screen in what promises to be a groundbreaking horror film."
This film agreement with Midway closely follows a June announcement that MTV and Midway will jointly market three upcoming Midway games. L.A. RUSH™, which will feature MTV branding throughout the game world with the crew from the hit MTV show, "Pimp My Ride," West Coast Customs, will be the first title shipping under this deal.

About The Suffering: Ties That Bind
The Suffering: Ties That Bind is a revolutionary action-horror game that emphasizes the disturbing terror of its predecessor, with new twisted creatures and a few familiar faces. Set in the unforgiving streets and prisons of Baltimore, the player once again controls Torque as he seeks revenge against the mysterious grand manipulator Blackmore, a man somehow tied to the death of Torque's family. Players will explore the tough inner-city, with poverty and urban injustices trapping people just as effectively as a physical prison. The unique morality system returns, as players delve into the perverse world of Torque's sanity to discover his past and struggle to control his future.
