ok well after u have cut the render out with the magnetic lasso tool u select the layer mask. with a foreground of black using the easer tool delete all the back ground that the magnetic lasso tool left.now if the magnetic lasso tool cut out any part of the render switch your foreground to white and bring back any parts of the render that was cut out by using the easere tool.

    well i hope that helped

Unfortunately it doesn't take much to confuse this newbie, and I don't understand what you are doing. I'm trying to learn and need all the help I can get.

    (1) I start with an image layer on a white background

    (1) I then trace out the part of the image I want to keep with the magnetic lasso tool. I'm not sure what you mean by not being "perfect". Does this mean I can leave some background in the lassoed image or can I sloppily exclude some parts of the desired image, or both?

    (2) I then clicking on the layer mask button. This action links a layer mask to my image layer and clears away everything that wasn't lassoed and I'm left with my desired image on a white background (not black like you show, but I assume that doesn't matter).

    (3) I then select the layer mask on the image layer (it is not a separate layer), make sure the foreground colour is black and when I apply the eraser tool the background image starts showing through the mask, wherever I apply the eraser tool.

Sorry, but I'm confused, I'm lost as to what I'm trying to do.

    Update:

I played with the erase tool and mask a bit more and it looks like the point of this tutorial is that you can flip back & forth between white & black foreground on the masked layer and the eraser tool flips between adding and erasing image elements from the original image until you've got the render the way you like.

Is this what you're teaching us, or am I still out to lunch?

    2nd Update:

That was it guys, I got! Geat idea, gives you a easy way to correct mistakes and fine tune your rendering work. A good enhancement to the basic eraser technigue.

    Thank you very much.
