    When I read topics about auctions and stuff like that, and when I look in the "Show your Stuff" section, I see people posting "tags".

    What is the definition of a "tag" and where is it used?
    Is it the same as a signature (it looks like something in that direction)

    And for clarification, I am NOT referring to BBCode or HTML tags, or anything like that.

    I heard someone say:

    sigs = tags
    tags = sigs

    And that some people who like the word "tag" better, use the word "tag"..

    IMO, that's pretty lame, because the rest of the internet, calls that a sig..

    They are the exact same thing just have a different name. Personally i call them tags. As a signature is what you sign on a cheque etc... but a tag is something that can represent you. like a piece of graffiti art.

    Signature:
    2. The act of signing one's name.
    3. A distinctive mark, characteristic, or sound indicating identity: A surprise ending is the signature of an O. Henry short story.

    Tag:
    8. An ornamental flourish, especially at the end of a signature.
    12. Slang. A graffito featuring a word or words, especially the author's name, rather than a picture.

    Tagged, Tagging, Tags:
    1. To label, identify, or recognize with or as if with a tag: I tagged him as a loser.
    7. To add a taggant to: explosives that were tagged with coded microscopic bits of plastic.

    If you want to get technical, a tag would be something reminescing of where you belong (like which crew your in, as in affiliating wth a "gang") or the background of your signature (where your style came from basically). Its the design of stuff at the end of a signature, such as an extensive amount of calligraphy at the end of the signature to add detail, you could probably relate the "tail" on the coca-cola logo to a "tag".

    A signature is the mark of your name, whether it be as simple as handwriting, or whether it be the use of computerized art to display your name.

    As far as GR and a few graphics sites are concerned, a tag and a signature are the same because they failed to grasp the concept behind the wording on the definitions (it was interpretted wrong from what the dictionary made it out to be). People believe "tag" is a more "professional" (in quotes due to the its an opinion as to what is "professional"), so they often use it to make their work and themselves in general sound better than they truly are and even technically are incorrect.

    That explain it well enough?

    My definition of a tag is a small image that goes directly below your signature, like this >

    The smaller under one would be the tag.

    Though if you really had one you would make it match more with your actual signature.
