I've never really seen any difference between adjusting the fill or opacity. would anyone care to explain the difference between the two to a newbie like me :P

Fill only reduces the images on the layers, but leaves layer effects etc 100% visable, while opacity lowers everything.

use a gradient map and set it to color dodge
first lower down the opacity to 50 and check how it looks
then put it back to 100 and this time lower the fill to 50 and see how it looks.

    There is a difference.

Both of them basically do the same thing to things on the layer, although the "fill" affects everything that is not a layer effect. Some layer styles, such as color dodge (mentioned above) are more affected by fill, whereas others are affected by opacity better. Depends on the look you're going for.

    Hope it helped.

It's one of those effects that are only used by high end graphics artists. Gotta get the shading juuuuust right ;)

I personally usually just mess with the fill... I think it looks nicer; because (I think, at least) it allows it to blend better.
