Ok, so i need a new system, xlink put together somthing last year, but most of it isn't available and i need different. Around £500-£600 without OS. Good stock speed, and room to overclock. Looking for the Antec nine hundred gaming case, and a 320/500gb drive with resonable speeds.
While I love to help people pick out their system, you're going to get a lot of opinions on these forums. You may be overwhelmed. I would suggest that you do some light research so you have a good idea of what products you want. Here you may get 10 different opinions on what system to build, but not really know which one to choose. Just some light research will help both you and me.
Understood. I forgot to mention a few things too. I will be using it for heavy apps, 3d moddeling, photoshop etc, and also a few games (mostly steam). I want good drive space, possible the seagate barracuda. Room for overclocking both cpu and graphics. Intel chipset + cpu would be good.
Well, if it's mostly steam games, (as in Valve make them) you won't need the best of the best graphics card. Something light, but yet powerful, such as an HD 3850 or an 9600GT . Both of them have fantastic price/performance ratios. Since you're going to be working with applications that require a lot of processing power, I'd suggest getting an Intel Quad Core. 3dsMax and other 3d modeling applications like quad cores. Rendering times will go down a lot. For your motherboard, you probably want a P35 chipset. Yes, the x38 chipset supports PCIe 2.0, but you won't be needing it, especially if you're not planning on going Crossfire. DFI makes some quality over clocking motherboards. However, if you're not seasoned with overclocking, you may want to go with a motherboard that has a few less options in the BIOS, such as Gigabyte motherboard. For RAM, I have the Crucial Ballistix Tracer, and they work flawlessly with my P35 chipset motherboard. To power your system, you'll obviously need a power supply. A lot of people are big fans of Corsair's line of power supplies. I personally have a Zalman power supply, and I love it. One of the two brands should be good for you, anywhere between 450-600 watts should meet your needs. For harddrives, I wouldn't recommend getting anything less then 320gigs. I have a 750gig Wester Digital hard drive. It's a bit loud at times, but it gets the job done. Both Wester Digital and Seagate are good companies. I haven't heard the best things about Maxtor, so you may want to stay away from them. Make sure your HDD comes with a good warrenty. The only other thing is (and this is optional, but recommend) is an after market cooler for your CPU. I have a Scythe ninja and my brother has a Thermaltake Max orb. Both of them are nice coolers, and get the job done well. Hope that helps edit Just noticed you're not in the US. Ah, oh well. Prices are different, but the products are the same
note how he listed prices in GBP... off the top of my head 500-600GBP will get you around $800USD or so worth of computer goods boards to consider Abit IP 35, gigabyte ds3(p35) 2GB RAM(the ballistix is usually decent because it has good chips) q6600 if you think you'll want to do a lot of multithreaded apps or e8400 if you're goal is great single/dual threaded performance(easy 4Ghz on those suckers) insert heatsink here(acrtic freezer 7 if you're good enough works for you, TRUE(thermalright ultra 120 extreme, basicaly the best) tuniq or thermalright ultima 90 if you want better) drives, the seagate 7200.10 is a decent drive. I'd consider the new 640GB Western digital cavier. it uses 320GB platters. higher platter density = high read speeds. those drives are absolutely silent too. just somewhat high seek times(16miliseconds) but still tolerable. PSU corsair HX450, silverstone STF500 etc. video cards 8800GS,9600GT, 8800GT 512 something like that I'll dig up links after class tomorrow
Thaks both of you. mm sounds alright xlink. I take it this is the drive you're talking about. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct....rodid=HD-198-WD
should have this product number WD6400AAKS it's a completely new product, other 320GB drives are 4*160 and 3*250(with 37GB per platter disabled) WD skipped 640GB so this is a completely new product. Their 320Gb drives are still half and half 2*160GB and 1*320GB and the part name is still the same on the 320Gb drives. only model number differentiates the 320GB version so that's a pain.
My laptop is a gateway, I run 4d modelling programs, photoshop fireworks dreamweaver flash etc... It's a 2GB dual processor and I ALSO play tons of steam games, no lag. $600 USD can go a long way at bestbuy. ^_^
