holy ----, you got $1000 left just for a computer? ---- everything else, AMD Athlon FX60 FTW . @Tool-band I would never be stupid enough to by a compute $3000+ when i could just assemble it personally for cheaper. At the moment, I got a Pentium D 820 Smithfield 2.8 Ghz DC, ATI Radeon 9500, 40 GB Seagate Berracudda HDD, 300 GB Maxtor HDD, PC CHIPS P21G Motherboard, Aspire X-Plorer Case, and a CD-DVD RW. Solid computer, just need a 256MB GFX card (GeForce 7800) and ill be set until the Athlon x2's drop in price. Oh and, btw, I'm only in around $750 give or take. (Didn't have to buy the moniter though, inheritented a 19" Dell flat screen from my previous computer.
he said he had 700, not 7000... and it doesn't matte because we don't know what he has. EDIT: sorry connection went weird DELETE POSTS! if you have 1000$ then you can get a bit. go for either the 7800Gt or the x1800XL for your GFX card, both are very powerful you probably have enbough ram to last a while so don't bother for a bit more a new harddrive may be in order, the 150 gig raptors are insanely fast and will speed everything up. what proc/motherboard do you have? a 2.4Ghz P4 won't cut it or an athlon XP, but if you have an Athlon 64 you could keep the proc a while longer and if your motherboard has a PCI-e slot then you can keep that longer as well. assuming you don't get the EVGA GFX card/motherboard combo which was mentioned and toss in an athlon X2 or an opertron 165 or higher another thing to ask is this: how many ampos are on the 12V rail on your power supply, and what id you PSU rated, all this new hardware might take some more power.
another thing is what socket size is ur pcu, because if ur mobo is fine then u might just want to get the cpu but... on the other hand the mobo comes free with the gfx card and the cpu is still the same price.
which then makes me a retard. tough call that proc is fairly powerfull but the x2 3800+ is a good step ahead. your proc is s478 though and has an AGP slot so you'd probably want a new motherboard anyway. get the 7800GT from EVGA with the bundled motherboard and then get the Athlon X2 3800+ or Opertron 165 for a processor. then put the rest into a good PSU(assuming yours isn't the greatest) or into a good fast HDD like a raptor
And just throw away a 3.0Ghz P4 with HTT, dude, ----ing tool, can i like give you my address and you like ship dat shi t to me?!
throw away? hardly, he can still put that to use in a secondary system along with the motherboard... if you ntoed I still left him with about 200$ and he could reuse his hardrive, that P4 could make a fairly decent CS server
hehe, like the way you think, just about what ima do with my old dell, just waiting on my new video card (its gonna be a shame seeing a classic aTi Radeon 9500 wasted on a server), i think a 1.8Ghz Pentium 4 processor should do find with 512 MB RAM for a webserver, dont ya think
the 9500 isn't THAT great of a card, but still it is a bit fo a waste on a server, but heck you could probably stick with INT GFX on a server unless you plan on playing on it simultaneously. if there were PCI-e slots on S478 boards I would just say to keep the motherboard, but that isn't so.
you would likely need some video output for functionality, but for a server you can get by with 8 bit color, no need for breath taking graphics.
