if you havent got anything to show in the bg dont make a tag that big, work on your text keep it simple and dont make it too large. But mainly on the bg,depth and focal of your tags.
Needs some good flow, lighting, depth. The effect at his hand is pretty well done, go read some tutorials since you are pretty new to photoshop and keep the canvas small, like 350*120 pixels. Do not go over 500*250 pixels ( that is very huge anyways ) but I think that is a good limit.
