The tut you are referring to is good and the proof is in the pudding.

My first was done by improvising and done the all the wrong tools (eraser)

I'm presently going through that same tut and the improvements on the results are astonishing.

I recommend that tut for anyone that is starting out... cause it's Noob to Rookie grade material in a flash
