i once heard its because they dont really like accounts being sold at all, so putting a date on it just decreases the sale of them.

The old topic specifically said it was to prevent people from registering new accounts, buying a membership, spamming to increase post counts and then selling them for a profit. It became a big problem in the summer of '05 which is why the staff brought that rule in then.
