So... I would like to move to linux from windows so I would like to know which distro is better and why. It would be great if you posted the pros and the cons of each distro Thanks in advance
^you mean Knoppix... Anyway.. Ubuntu is about the best for newbs. Fedora Code 5 is also good, it comes bundled with alot of things, like Open Office, Firefox, etc. FYI, if you are a gamer or gfxer, Linux is not for you. It is possible to run some games and some gfx progs, but its tricky..
If you want a good GUI pick Fedora It's based on redhat. I use it some times and i really like it. But the question is: what are you going to use it for? If it's for hosting purpuses you probaly should use Debian
I'll use it mainly to make some use of my old comp (not too old). Oh and I would prefer a distro which is able to use KDE, i'm no gnome fan :S
only exxpect photoshop 7 to work in linux. Also, as master said, ubuntu is best suited towards beginners. The 3rd program automatix mreo ro less completely sets it up for the average user. I"m usaing ubuntu right now... if you're really advanced and comfortabel with linux though look into gentoo. I had trouble even installing gentoo though... it's a pain.
Ubuntu is the best for n00bs like me. Don't expect many Windows programs to work in Linux and don't expect Linux to be easy to learn. Still don't know how to setup the wireless card after almost a year. ;(
Well, it's not linux but I really like freebsd if you are intersted in using an easy to install *bsd environment you can check out pcbsd and desktopbsd which coem with graphical installers+kde etc. as for linux distros, ubuntu is good for beginners but uses gnome, gentoo will be tricky if your new to linux, I've always liked slackware, suse is good too , gedora core might use kde I can't remember since it's beena while but I know it's heavy and takes alot of hd space... so here is my list of reccomendations 1)PCBsd 2)Suse
fedora does have kde. if you want ubuntu but don't like gnome, try Kubuntu, which is ubuntu with kde.
Isn't that a bitch? <_< I have a nice lapto and I cant use it. It doesn't even have an ethernet port. ;( One of these days I will have time to figure it out...If it isn't till I'm retired.
