Well, Im planning on getting a new laptop sometime in the near future, hopefully by the end of the month. The budget is around 12 or 1300 dollars.

I need opinions on which brands are best and on my selection.

I want this laptop to be able to handle alot of stuff at once. Ill primarily be using it for internet/schoolwork but also will be using cs2 on it and playing some games like diablo 2, maybe wow, cs, and maybe a few others.

This is curently the specs I have selected, with an HP computer. If you can find a better build elsewhere, post it.

    HP dv8000t series PC
    Genuine Windows XP Home Edition
    Intel® Core™ Duo processor T2400 (1.83 GHz)
    17.0" WXGA+ Ultra BrightView Widescreen (1440x900)
    256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 7600
    FREE Upgrade to 1.0GB DDR2 SDRAM (2x512MB)!!
80 GB 5400 RPM SATA Hard Drive (upgrading hd is too expensive, 20 more gigs for 50 bucks, il just buy an extra external so dont gimme more hdd)
    Super Multi 8X DVD+/-R/RW w/Double Layer Support

    price $1,474.99 *
    instant savings -$150.00
    mail-in rebate -$50.00
    price $1,274.99
    you saved 13.6%
    as low as $40 /mo+
Apply now. Get up to 12 months no payments.

    Estimated build date:
    August 21, 2006

so its 1274.99, with the free ram upgrade, without it would be 1374.99

When do you plan on buying it? If its any day now, then Core Duo is the best option, but if you're waiting for a while, the mobile core 2 duo will be out, and that will be a better choice.

When does that come out? How will it affect pricing?

It comes out within a few weeks if I remember correctly. I dont think the pricing is supposed to be that much different from what it is now.

If you're in no hurry, I'd say wait the extra few weeks, it should be worth it.

I have an IBM thinkpad it works great. Ive had it for about a year and it works good. I have CS:S and 1.6 on it and they both run smooth I also had photoshop on there so look into the thinkpads.

Also, would it be worth waiting for vista to come out or no?

No don't bother waiting for vista to come out.. wait about 9 months after vista is released or you'll be kicking yourself.

Don't get HP.. they inflate prices and use crappy parts.

Acer is an excellent manufacturer of Laptops. I suggest you take a look on Newegg or somewhere else and see :)

i wouldnt get 1 unless you reall need it, ive seen friends just buy them, and they dont take them anywhere, they could have gotten a desktop.. heres why u want to avoid laptops

you pay more to get crappier parts
the parts are close together, and the fan is small, so they over heat easy(happened to my last 2 laptops, killed em both)

I could get a desktop, but the primary reason I'm buying my own computer is so I can take it with me in the house, so I wouldnt be constricted to my room or here (basement, computer room) and could use it whereever.

Whats wrong with HP? To the people who are telling me acer, do they have a model similar to this HP one with about the same specs and around the same price?
