first of all, you can't use hotmail with thunderbird/outlook unless you pay a subscription. to configure thunderbird to a gmail account follow the steps below

    1. open thunderbird, click on tools, then scroll down to account settings.

2.if there is any accounts already stored in the window that pops up (they will be in bold) delete them, as they are presumably a mis configuration if it doesn't work for you

3.click the add new button and in the wndow that pops up select email account

4.click next and enter the name you want to be shown in the "From" section of your sent mail, and enter your email address

5.click next and if your using it for gmail select POP (hotmail is probably the same) and for the server name put pop.gmail.com and tick the global inbox checkbox

6.enter your Full email address as the incoming username.

e.g if your username was 123 on a gmail account enter [email protected]

    7. enter what you would like to call your account on thunderbird (e.g my mail)

    8. the wizard should now close, expand the key by clicking the + symbol next to the account you just created (the only one in bold)

9.click on the server settings option and make sure the server name is pop.gmail.com (if you are using gmail :P ) and the port number is 995

    10. go down to SMTP settings and make sure the server name is smtp.gmail.com and the port is 587

    11. check the use name & password box and the username should be your full email address

12.on the use secure connection section below what you just entered make sure that TLS is selected.

13.click ok then on the mail window click the get mail button and your good to go :)

I hope this helped, if you have any more problems add my msn and I should be able to sort things out for you :)

IF YOU ARE TRYING TO USE THUNDERBIRD TO GET EMAIL FROM YOUR PLACE OF WORK, MAKE SURE THEY USE POP AND NOT MICROSOFT EXCHANGE SERVER, IF THEY DO USE OUTLOOK 2003 AS THUNDERBIRD DOES NOT SUPPORT EXCHANGE

So basically use thunderbird only for emails that can accept it

and if your emial provider doesnt do that well then your out of luck
