how to create good lighting effects and smoke using photoshop cs. Photoshop gives a tutorial for smoke, but it doesn't work without using a real image of smoke.

Not sure about smoke, but for light effects, you can go to filters>render> lens flare/lighting
or use a 100+/- white soft brush.

if u want a really simple smoke effect. duplicate the layer, then give it a gaussian blur of around 3.0 or so, then go filter>distort>ripple and set it to around i dunno 250 or so

repeate the ripple if needed, i found that this works well with text dunno how it would work with a full on image, set it to lighten maybe or whatever makes it look ok

using the same technique i posted you could use the lasso tool to select certain parts to give it a smoke effect as well. you can also try a motion blur with an angle of 90 and a distance of around 30-60 then use the ripple as well, but doing that gives it more of a flamish look rather than smoke
