(AP) -- The Hilton hotel near Dulles International Airport has been closed for a top-to-bottom scrubbing after more than 100 guests were sickened by the highly contagious norovirus, a hotel spokesman said Friday. A total of 120 people, including 105 guests and 15 employees, have fallen ill, said Jim Cree, the hotel's director of sales and marketing. Outbreaks of norovirus, which causes vomiting and diarrhea, are common on cruise ships and in places like hotels, prisons and nursing homes. Cree said hotel officials first heard reports of sick guests Wednesday morning and contacted Fairfax County health authorities. He said officials confirmed it was norovirus Thursday evening. "Yesterday we stopped taking reservations," Cree said. "Today we're actually relocating guests, and we've relocated all of our events to other hotels." Cree said the hotel would reopen Tuesday at noon. Authorities are investigating, but may never be able to pinpoint the source of the outbreak, said Kimberly Cordero, a spokeswoman for the Fairfax County Health Department. The hotel outbreak is just the latest in a series of norovirus cases this winter in northern Virginia, said Lucy Caldwell, a spokeswoman for the state health department. Other outbreaks have been seen in day care centers and nursing homes, she said. Caldwell added, however, the number of cases is not anything unusual. Caldwell said frequent hand-washing and other sanitation measures are crucial to preventing the spread of norovirus, which can be contagious even after symptoms subside. She said people with the virus should be careful to wipe off surfaces such as telephones, remote controls, children's toys, and even toilet handles. "It sounds funny, but you spend a lot of time in the toilet when you have this illness," Caldwell said.
