First I would like you all to understand that I know abosolutely nothing about computers, how to build etc. The extent of my knowledge is left click start>loading>all programs>photoshop
So I need to build a graphicly entense computer, I would like to be able to play all of the latest games, and I need to be able to run big programs, I need to be able to multitask to my hearts content and be able to save large image and video files.
Is there something that you guys can recommend? What do you use?
I'm looking to stay under 2grand. I was looking at dell *gasp* and they have a nince looking xps, with a D processor, and 2gigs of ram, along with a 250gig hd and a 19in flatty. For around 1,400? Is that a good deal?
I also looked on newegg, but I had no idea where to start, I had a really hard time finding out which processors were compatable with which cases etc. What proc do you guys recommend?
    Thanks in advance :]

$2000 is a lot. PM me if you can't find any of the parts I've listed.

    AMD Opteron 170
    EPoX 9NPA+ Ultra
    OCZ 2x1GB Platinum DDR400
    eVGA Geforce 7800GT
    Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 250GB
    Antec P180
    Antec NeoHE 500W
    NEC 3550A DVD-RW
    Logitech G5
    Microsoft Natural 4000 Keyboard

If you want a monitor, get the Viewsonic VX924.

All of them can be found at one of the following sites:
    www.newegg.com
    www.monarchcomputers.com
    www.zipzoomfly.com

I've ordered from all of them and they are all excellent.

    // NEVER EVER get a Dell. Unless you're on a sub-$1000 budget.

That's not even $1500. If it is, then you're getting raped by your local retailer.

I'd reccomend a Western Digital Raptor 37 or 74 GB hard drive, and a 250-300 gb backup drive. You can get a 37 GB Raptor for about $140 and a 300 GB HD for about $90 at tigerdirect.com. And Look into getting a big power supply, I'd reccomend 500W, if your going for a high-end gaming rig.
I'd also reccomend picking up some Mushkin PC3200 DDR RAM, a 1 Gig stick is about $85 at TD. a couple of those should be able to handle pretty much whatever you throw at it.

If I built my computer at newegg I was thinking.

    -full tower
    -260gig hd
    -2-3 gigs of ram
    -pentium d processor at 3.0
    -big power supply
    -19in flatty
    -and windows xp pro

The only problem is if I build it myself I would have to put it together, and I would have to install the operating system which I have no idea how to do.
More comments are great, the ones are ready posted are ausome thanks for you feedback, I'll be checking them out now!

I don't really need what kind of parts, I was more hopeing to know what kind of system I should hit for? Like how much ram should I get etc?
Also can anyone tell me what the 3.0ghz or 2.8ghz mean? is 3 better than 2?

get amd. Its better alround now especially with the dual cores as they beat everything an intel has to offer. If you dont know how to install an operating system I am afraid that you shouldnt even bother building a pc.

Anyways build this and it will be awesome for some time to come -

    AMD x2 4400+
    DFI Ultra-D
    2GB (2x1GB) OCZ Value RAM
    XFX 7800GT or GTX
    Benq DW1640
    74GB Western Digital Raptor
    250gb Western Digital SATA
    Viewsonic VX924

Well I searched for a bit, and this is the case that I think I like the most.
I just have no idea what the specs mean?
What kind of power supply should I get? And what kind of fans and or water cooling? And if someone could give me the def of heatsink?
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16811173008
Also, when it says it is ATX what exactly does that mean?
I'm guessing it has something to do with the mother board, and or layout of the computer case?

What kind of power supply should I get?

    At least 400-500 watts

And what kind of fans and or water cooling?

Any of these fans, the more expensive, the better
    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/ca....asp?CatId=493&

Do not go to water cooling unless you want to overclock..

or get this water cooling case: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Se...649624&CatId=32

And if someone could give me the def of heatsink?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heatsink

Also, when it says it is ATX what exactly does that mean?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atx

Wikipedia is your friend as well as google...

AMDs athlon x3800+ rapes the 3.2 GHz pentium extreme edition analy and costs about 700$ less the X2 4800+ just completely dominates it for 200$ less.

this is what I suggest for your budget:

    AMD Athlon X2 4400+
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16819103546

Two 7800GTs in SLI(unlock the pipelines)
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814150108

2 gigs dual channel DDR400 ram
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16820227210

    600Watt PSU
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16817148025

two 36gig 10000rpm hardrives in RAID0 (doubles speed great for gaming)
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16822144200

two 200gig HDDs for storage(still very fast if in RAID0)
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16822148032

    Motherboard:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16813131568

Case- very light, good airflow, cools well
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16811129145

if you go dell though expect to pay 5000-8000$ for one of their servers for similar performance, because nothing Intel offers compares to AMDs dual core procs right now, oud have to get two single core Xeons at high clock speed to compare to the x2 4400+
