Hey there. I had a problem that I needed some help on.

Basically, when I start my comp. it boots fine. At the welcome screen, I can move the mouse too. The problem is that it freezes when I press any key. The blinking line on the text input (where you put the password) still blinks though.

I've tried booting into Safe Mode as well. Same thing when I press any key. It freezes. I've tried "Last Known Good Configuration" as well.

I'm not quite sure what to do anymore. This is another comp. that I'm using.

Are there any "recovery xp installation software" that I can download and perhaps recover my comp?

Or, is it possible to get rid of the password on the welcome screen? If I can do that, then I might be able to login (since I won't have to input anything).

What about doing a system restore without logging in, is that possible? If I could just get in once and back-up my data, then I'd be happy. And then. I can re-install XP.

What if I get an external HD, take out this computers HD and put it into mine and boot XP from there. Is it possible then if I can somehow back my data up onto an external HD?

Thanks, any help is greatly appreciated.

PS: There is a similar problem here: http://www.trap17.com/index.php/wind...t24555-10.html by "Armyguy"

And my question is, what's a good external HD? Like, a good and trustworthy brand?

I'm an Systems Administator for a business this summer so i work on pc's most of the day and we had a similar problem but the pc was under warranty. It ended up being a Hard drive but we had the Motherboard/Proccessor and hard drive replaced but i have some tests for you to try ..

So if you would hit me up on yahoo or msn... the info is on my profile page...

I fixed the problem. Thanks anyways.

Although, my question still remains. What is the best external HD? I was planning to buy one anyways.

there are a variety of things that can be the cause.

few suggestions, download and run memtest see if it's the RAM

also could be a corrupt operating system and nothing more, try doing a repair installation of windows.

could be another part as well.

EDIT: D`OH, too late... hahaha. well sorry dude, you posted it when I was asleep and I was gone all day.

It was the registry. But, to be honest, I actually needed your help regarding the HD since I fixed it before you posted lol!
