the western digital WDG1 range are really good external drives....
Firewire 400 & USB 2.0,Capacity: 250GB,7200 RPm,8MB Cache you can pick one up for about £90 ($175 US) all depends on how much you want to spend there are better out there but these are a good mid-range external drive at a good price

You should stick to 7200 rpm and take as much memory as possible, I don't think that it should be so much difference between them but you shouldn't maybe take the cheapest one if you want to be sure that it won't break.

Western Digital and Seagate I know are good.

there are several OEM ones that are a bit lower and will surfice just the same.

You're going to want that 10k RPM for the speed, and a great firewire cord. Depending on what you're using it for, a 100GB should be ok, but it doesn't hurt to go up more if you can still get a deal on it.

do that. only difference is you have to plug the hard drive in through the sata/ide and plug the 4pin male/female in. matters whether you want to pay the premium for easier firewire/usb port access.

you have no idea what an external enclosure is do you?

    yeah didnt think so!!

you plug the HDD into the external enclosure and it has all the connection for power and IDE/SATA and it makes it into usb or firewire or eSATA

you had something different in mind. I would have just got a box and put the hard drive in there, and plugged the hard drive into the computer via ide/sata. i wouldnt burn $30-$40 on an enclosure.

im sure there is plenty of things i know about that you don't, so don't be a jackass.
