The effects are to mimic the effect on Haze when you are injured, your screen is partcially faded to black and white, the outside is shown as red to show the damage. I'm not sure how it turned ot though, my judgement is from the side of the game, not a "photoshopper" on this one. CnC please =]
The white ruins it, though it is intended as part of it. It just looks over-contrasted with the dark figure having the white walls. Maybe darken the background a little bit, and try to bring out the render a little bit more. Keep practicing.
