Might be dumb, lol. But, I have this old computer(back from the late 90's) that I barely use anymore, but it has about 512MB of RAM, and an Nvidia graphics card. I was wondering if I could take the RAM(and video card) out of that one, and put it into the one I'm using now?
it depends on the type of ram and on the graphics card. most probably the ram will not work together with your new one. but your motherboard, dependong pn what you have, should be able to support it. im not too sure though. would need a bit more detail
If it's a late 90's comp your probably using PC-100 or PC-133, maybe even older. The graphics card is possibly a PCI graphics card. Don't confuse it with a PCI-Express graphics card. An AGP graphics card will still be compatible with some of the current mobos around. If you can't use it, try making money out of it by selling it on eBay. People are still willing to pay a pretty penny for the memory.
Now adays, everything must link up, for example; one can't be AGP and one something else. Check up on what the types are, then you could try as long as they're the same.
Kind of right, with a little exception. Your RAM speeds don't have to match up perfectly; say your motherboard supports DDR-400, and the RAM is DDR-100, it will still work.
I have another computer thats basically the same as this one, but it keeps rebooting before even getting to the start screen. I was gonna try it with that one, but I dunno if it would mess up this computer.
Ex: I have pc3200 ram so pc6400 will not work with my motherboard If you know what your mother board that will be able to help. or find out what pc-number your current computer has so you might need to open it or find a program that tells you. and see if it matches the old ram. and about the video card your new computer might be better and you cant use 2 video cards at the same time unless they are for SLI or Crossfire. Which is for fairly new computers that can do it. So I'm sure your video card you are using is currently better than the old one so you wouldn't want to swap that. just figure out what ram the old computer has and see if you can add it to the current pc. :shaggy:
it depends on the type of RAM, the chipset on your motherboard, and the voltage regulation of the board. chances are older RAM won't work on newer baords. sdRAM wont' work in DDR boards and DDR won't work in DDR2 boards. And vice versa. as for the graphics card, I'm willing to be it would be more of a downgrade than an upgrade unless you keep your old card/integrated graphics. and FlanteJuice, you CAN use two graphics cards simultaneously, its been done since the 90s. Ever hear of 3dfx? they were the king of the 3d market in the 90s, but they didn't have 2d acceleration in their GPU so you had to buy two separate graphics cards.
