Very interesting although you do not need anything selected in MSCONFIG for your system to startup properly. I also suggest you do not believe anything at all microsoft claims or says because 90% of the time it only sometimes is the case or is a complete load of bull.
i use the Lavasoft Ad-Aware, McAfee AVG Virus Protector, and Zone Alarm Pro(the one you pay for) Only had one bad virus that ----ed up my registrya dn had to reformat but other than that its good(prob got virus from games i downloaded) i think Zone Alarm is the best firewall
Yep...I've used msconfig for as long as I can remember and I've had no problems. The key is to not disable the things you use, as already said it will cause a memory leak. Just disable the things you don't use. The ones I turned off with a DELL installation disk were the microsoft messenger (POS anyway), my printer services (turn them on and reboot before I print to prevent leaks, all that AOL crap that came with the comp, and the driver updats for my sonic dvd player. Luckily as an IT student, I got a bare essentials XP installation disk, and didn't have to turn hardly anything off. However I've also run across a great program to analyze your startup processes. It is called Autoruns and it can be found here. It will verify all components that have a Microsoft Digital Signature and allow you to hide them and see only things added by software you've installed. Good advice for people that don't already know this stuff though. Oh yeah, and AVG is good like the one person mentioned already. Haven't tried the Avast one though. Will have to check it out.
Thanks, when my comp ban is lifted it looks like im going to have a lot to add to my guide. Thanks for info guys!
Along with Firefox, the Microsoft Antispyware thingy does a pretty good job of cleaning out your computer.
