It had more to do with the worldwide launch. The hype is just a side effect of it. Funny how people are blowing things out of proportions though.

Microsoft did the understock on purpose. Do you honestly think they won't have enough by the time Christmas rolls around?

Is anybody going to die because they can't have it now? Is there a reason (besides the ones that pre-ordered) that you need it now? The console is going have a good 4-6 years ahead of it and there aren't even any games that take advantage of the hardware yet, almost all were being developed on the Xbox originally.

I know it sucks for the people that did pre-order. You do so to ensure what you buy on release but some of them might not get it for another month depending on the store.

I pre-ordered in June, so dont feel bad. I knew I wasnt going to be getting mine for a while at the rate the preorders are coming in for GameStop, so I waited in line at Best Buy for 12 hours and sure enough I got my 360 sittin right next to me. If you can, try to do the same. Some stores there probably didnt take preorders either, so try sitting outside the store for the launch and I bet you will get one if you are there early. If not, I can tell you right now, it is going to be a while before you get one.

As for the shortages, a number of factors come into play. First off, all the contests going on everywhere, such as every10minutes. Secondly, the worldwide launch. Its tough to get all those 360s made in time to provide for all of these countries, obviously. Thirdly, a number of consoles had defects, so they had to trash those; yet some consoles that were released still have defects as well.
