Well, with that info, we can't help you. I think you have a AGP port on your motherboard but just to make sure (because most old dells don't even have an expansion slot for vGA) Goto cpuid.com, download CPU Z, open it up and switch to the mainboard tab, then under graphic interface it should say something like AGP x4 or x8 or like all the newer boards have PCI-E x16...

Ok you got AGP, now you can buy a expensive AGP card, or upgrade your motherboard and buy a better and less expensiver PCI-E Card.... your choiche.

I'd splash out on a new computer, you can get a decent custom one for round £400, obviously spend a bit more for a better one.

check to see if you have an AGP port you sure the hell don't have PCI-e since it wasn't invented at that time.
x1600 pro is your best bet for under 100 for rpetty good performance, bang/$ on AGP

my second recomendation is a 6600, but for the extra 5$ you get nearly 50% more performance and a better implementation of SM3

ehh with all but the highest cards the diference in bandwdth from 4x to 8x doesn't affect peerformance enough for you to really care...

FYI at this price range, and selection you really do get what you pay for. if you just need something for display the cheepo 6200 LE(crippled edition) will suffic, it is about twie as powerful as the geforce 4 you have. the x1600 pro has about 3 times the computational capacity of the 6200LE though.

I use an ATi Radeon 9550 (AGP) 256mb. I can play Battlefield 2 with ok graphics, and I know BF isn't a very new game but it does have high requirements. I can play Half Life 2 with a solid resolution, and good quality. I really haven't tried anything brand new, the latest thing I have tried is GW:Factions and that runs pretty well.

well the x1600 is about 2-3 times the card so go figure...

and yes, without getting a more or less ----ty card x1600pro is the ebst bang/$ AGP card as far as I know.

xelink I just bought a card last night and I wanted to get your opinion on it as well. Fortunately, I think it's the same card that you are talking about here.

    Radeon® X1600 PRO 512MB PCI Express®

Is this the card ? If not, what do you think of this one?

I know I'm sort of intruding your conversation, but for $200, that's a very nice card. You could probably max out HL2 at 1280X1024 at an acceptable framerate.

Thanks for the advice Andy but that would depend on the CPU stats as well not just the card. I should be good to go though anyway.. :)

I'm still curious if this card is sufficent or if another card is better for the same amount of money. I have 14 days left to return it, if I am going to. ;)

Ehh, honestly, the $100ish you paid I would have gone different. I would have gone with the x850XT or the x800GTO. Both have faster core//memory, and faster memory type (GDDR3 instead of GDDR2.)
