As for now I am probably going to go for the Diamond X1550 --- Card and the 500W PSU for about 60bucks
    Thanks to everyone for helping...

    Now another problem
Where can i find a bit cheaper 1GB ram stick for this computer?
so i can get atleast 2 GB ram into it...

    But Xelink
for the new diamond --- 1550 you need atleast 420W powersupply...

also I believe my computer uses some odd type of ram
    not ddr2 :(

    dont know which one
it is an old Dell Dimension 8200

    uhh that's bull----.

I can assure you that card doesn't need atleast a 420W PSU.

    see that picture there?
that's the PCI version of the card. It has no additional power connectors. That' means it gets all it's power from the PCI slot.
As far as i know, PCI slots can't deliver past 25W worth of power. Which means that your x1550 would run at under 25W. That's usually well within the headroom of an OEM system.

    let's put it into perspective.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814121034
this card uses 5 fold the power ATLEAST. Note the 400W ranking.

so basically the 420 ranking is BS, it's probably a typo of some sort

    in fact
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList....n=x1550&x=0&y=0

no other x1550 even mentions power requirements. Really, they don't draw much power.

    =========
    so

    1.8Ghz P4- 60W
    512 RAM - 20W
    80GB at 7200 RPM - 12W
    CD Writer/Reader -15W(but only rarely)
    low end motherboard - 20-30W
    current video card/video solution <25W
    TOTAL ~150-170W

    what's you're changing to

    1.8Ghz P4- 60W
    512 RAM - 20W
    80GB at 7200 RPM - 12W
    CD Writer/Reader -15W(but only rarely)
    low end motherboard - 20-30W
    x1550 <25W
    TOTAL ~150-170W

then consider the fact that each component can never be 100% loaded simultaneously with the others. if you're CPUs @100%, the the board and RAM aren't doing much since they're not transferring much data to the CPU and vice versa. same applies system wide.

again try it first. basically install card, install drivers, then run orthos and ATitool articfact scanner simultaneously and that should put more load on your system(and consequently the PSU) than is likely under 95+% of circumstances.

    and viola some searching nets
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductRevie...N82E16814102081
someone with a system that eats around 30-40W more running off an average quality 250W OEM PSU. trust me you'll be fine in this case.

    ohh for your RAM.

    don't bother.

    your system uses RAMBUS RAM.

    most horribly overpriced garbage ever.
    did I mention it's overpriced?

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList....n+RDRAM+(16bit)

have a look. It's out of production and it's not getting any cheaper since there's around a 50$ licencing charge placed on it by RAMBUS. better/cheaper to buy a CPU/board combo on sale and new RAM.

as for linking DDR2 RAM at first, force of habit, everything went to DDR in 2001 or so and then in 2004 or 2006 it went to DDR2(depending on if you went with intel or AMD) I'm used to linking to DDR2. as it is, DDr2 is soon to be replaced by DDR3.chances are my next system will be using DDR3.

    ooh ok
I know because I went to fry's and they said the same thing about it being stupidly overpriced!

    don't worry bro
Probably this upgrade might not happen
I am waiting for the intel prices to come back down a bit so i can probably then build a whole damn computer!
    :P

    Thanks again!

Fry's is one of those stores where you either get a good deal or you get ripped off horribly.

sometimes you can get good deals, I got a 7600GT for 73$ after rebate from fry's around 6 months ago. A week later, they were 160 w/o rebate. Today the cheapest I can find one is like $90
