    gimp is free...
it doesnt cost more money, and has less features as its made after photoshop, but ive seen professional sigs made by gimp, and i use it myself, theres no difference in the programs if you do a little research and combine things.

I'm a PS fan, although I have never actually used GIMP, so I have no real basis for comparison.

I've never used GIMP but based on the fact that it's freeware and photoshop costs... well lots of cash, I'd say photoshop is probably better.

    GIMP is gimp.

Photoshop is better because with GIMP don't you have to make brushes "gimp brushes?" Since PS is universal it's easy to just download a whole bunch of brushes/fonts while you have to customize a program like GIMP to get stuff you want, and then like has already been said, when you have a program worth $300 and one that's free, which one do you think would be better?

I used both, Gimp hasn't crashed once, and it has most features you have with PS. But some you don't :P
    Plus Gimp is free
But yeah PS pwz Gimp if you have enough money :)
