Sorry in advance if this has been answered already but I'm new and I don't really feel like looking though all these posts right now. I want to make a sig using Ratchet from Ratchet and Clank: UYA, so should I email Insomniac and ask if I can use a picture of Ratchet in a forum signature? Do I have to be more specific on what image and what part(s) I'm using of the pic? I would really hate to have to get permission for every sig I make. Also, if I am only using the pic for experimenting with new ideas and not putting it on the internet, do I still need permission? I also heard that using wallpapers is ok. Is that true and is it also true for gamewallpapers.com? Sorry about all the questions, I just want to know for sure.

Well, from what I read, only DA and CGTalk are off limits right now (I also hope you weren't being sarcastic)

Now, I want to ask a question, what if you found the image on a regular website, and then someone goes and tells you it's on DA or CGTalk and you weren't aware?

I'm being serious, but sorry if it was confusing. Let me clarify. I know DA and CGTalk are off limits, but I'm talking about using video game characters for sigs. Do I have to get permission from the company to legally use an image of it's character? (In this case, Ratchet.) I also heard that if it's a wallpaper then it's legal to render it without permission, so I asked if that's true and if it also is legal to use wallpapers from gamewallpapers.com since they aren't coming from the company itself. (I think.)

You already answered your own question, the only places (at the moment) where you can't get images are DA and CGTalk, any other place is fine

Ok, I'm sorry but I want to try and explain myself one last time. What I want to know is why is it ok for us to use images of video game characters? They are copyrighted by the game company that created them, so wouldn't using an image of a video game character also be considered ripping a render?

As long as you wern't the one that ripped the render and you're just using it and you didn't know it was from DA or CG then it should be ok.

Let me clarify this, you can not use DA or CG Talk renders unless you have written permission from the person that made it. If they give you permission then you can use it all you wan't.

I would e-mail him and make sure it's ok. He probably wouldn't care just as long as you ask him first.
