I just got webhosting and im looking into making forums. I heard PhpBB is best free one but it alays seems slow. Any other ideas of whats good?
phpBB is free and is not that slow though. But you need to have your own webhosting for it. On the other hand, you can turn to sites wich offer you free forums, including the space you need. Then you have the choice between basically anything. Phpbb forum hosting Ipb forum hosting And I think there are some sites that will offer free Vbulletin forum hosting as well, but not sure
try SMF is free.. phpbb is not that slow :/ just depends the hacks (add-ons) you add. which consumes lots mysql query's
phpBB can be a bit of a chore to run but if its all going well its probably the best out there; smf is also good but has far more exploits possible so security wise not great. Personally I would use a Jcink forum board from http://ipbservice.jcink.com/ which is a free hosting service; basically you register an IPB 1.3 board on their servers and don't have to worry about hosting yourself. The thing I like about them personally is the Staff really keep the features up to date so for instance, though its running an old version of IPB, you have the IPB 2.3.x registration setup and *soon* the 2.3.x Profile system as well all pre-installed and bug free. Plus most of the popular mods are all there, free of charge, to be activated from the admin control panel such as the Reputation mod, IBStore, Arcade, RPG etc. etc. All in all it pretty much gives you the flexibility of a hosted forum without the hassle of hosting yourself and a fast help service if you do get stuck.
uh actually SMF is far more secure than many forums, SMF used to be YABB and YABB was a very secure forum. if id says PHPBB had far more bugs exploit over the past few years... and really bad ones too yeah the new PHPBB have unproved a lot true..
