    the filter attribute in CSS is a way for setting opacity in Internet explorer.

    an example would be:

    Code:
    filter: alpha(opacity=50);
    just change the 50 to whatever you want, but it has to be between 0 and 100

    no, there are 3 different attributes for setting opacity. In order to make them work in all 3 major browsers (IE, Opera, FireFox) you need to set all 3 of them. But, we warned that none of the attributes are standards friendly ;).

    IE:
    Code:
    filter: alpha(opacity=50);
    Firefox:
    Code:
    -moz-opacity: 0.5;
    Opera:
    Code:
    opacity: 0.5;
    so, in the end, it's best not to use them at all, unless it's for small tings like image rollovers (it makes a nice little effect).

    to use drop shadows is a complicated thing. You have to use negative margins, the fuzzy images, and lots of other little tricks. Then there is the task in cross browser compatibility.

    I'm not really in the mood of explaining it here. So here is a little tutorial on how to make CSS drop shadows: http://www.dynamicdrive.com/style/csslibra...e-drop-shadows/
