This is gonna be first time I typed in a forum, omfg. The OS disc that you bought! Just load it into DOS mode and repair it!

 

i have had the comp for a while so i dont even know where the disk is at

Well..You're pretty much screwed then until you either find the cd, or buy a new one. Repair install won;t work without it.

 

for a single missing file any type of the same version shoulkd work.

xp --- disc works w/ xp home and mce.

 

well i have an hp computer would an xp disk still work?

Did you try the way HydrogeN said.

And yes you can buy a Windows Xp disk.

Hp is the type of computer core it is built on
Windows xp is the operating system

And if that doesn't work, just try reformatting your pc.
