I'm ashamed, disgusted, and just disturbed by some of what was said in this thread. I've been part of this community for atleast three years and never once had it crossed my mind that anyone on this board would see me differently due to the color of my skin.

I am a proud African American.

Almost everyone in this topic relates racism against african americans to what happened in the 1800's, when in fact, there has been racism in the current day and age.. let's not forget :

1970 - The Jackson State "Tragedy"

    1992 /Rodney Glenn King:
Three officers and a sergeant were indicted on March 14 for "assault by force likely to produce great bodily injury" and with assault "under color of authority," and two were charged with filing false police reports. Three of the men charged were Caucasian, and one was Latino. The acquittal in a state court of the four officers charged with using excessive force in subduing King
provided the spark that led to the 1992 Los Angeles riots.

Amado Diablo: An African American man Shot at 41 times by the NYPD, 19 of those bullets finding their mark, some of those bullets coming up through the man's feet, indicating that he was not only shot down, but that the police continued to shoot after he had been shot down.

Look.. i won't drag this out, but there has been alot of racially motivated oppression against all different creeds and colors for the past few hundred years right up to the present. Do not play it off like it's some far off thing that we should just learn to forget..

(and this comment took the cake for me..

    RikkuFox FTW:

ALSO, MOST slaves were not even treated badly, MOST were treated like part of the family. There were some of course, that were treated wrongly,

    Definition of a slave:

.someone entirely dominated by some influence or person
.a person who is owned by someone

    Part of the family? )

i see your point, the name racist, should apply to everyone. however, african-americans, latino americans, asian americans, were persecuted for a very long time by caucasians.

You know what i hate even more, those T-Shirts they wear that say, "Stop Black on Black Crime" which means stop black people from killing other black people, you know what that means that means its ok to kill white people, it doesnt say "Stop Crime".

which is also, helping caucasians change. i guess that proves my point that, martin luther king jr. day, is not just a day for african americans. "However Martin King, never did anything except help black people." that is incorrect.

No, it's correct. He may have tried to help white people, but only to better black people's lives.

i dont think martin luther king jr. is just a black holiday. otherwise it wouldnt be a federal and state (not everybody in a state is african-american) holiday. he fought for freedom for all people. he fought for an idea, a promise that stated "all men would be guaranteed the inalienalbe rights of liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." so we will have a day where "all of god's children, black men and white men, jews and gentiles" coincide peacefully. are u saying a shouldnt celebrate that day, because i am not african american?

I normally don't celebrate it, I let the black people have a nice day. I don't mind that it is a black holiday. I'm just saying, it is.

Personally, I think racism is disgusting. It doesn't matter what color somebodies skin is at all. I have seen some disturbing comments from some people in this topic, enough to make me want to leave the forums entirely. Then I remember, no matter where you go, there will always be discrimination of any kind, but to see it announced as if it were nothing... Scary.

As I have observed, it's not only white people who are racist, but many people are. White people have the worst history of being racist. Look at the slaves; no, most were NOT treated like one of the family. The lucky ones were. The deeper south you got, the worse it got. They were just a disposable tool for helping with crops and making more money.

Gah, this subject gets me fired up, especially when I see people supporting racism. It doesn't matter where you come from, what you look like, the color of your skin... if you are going to judge somebody, judge them on how they act and what they do. Looks and skin color is something we cannot really change, and we can't choose how we are born, but can control our actions.

You see, your missing the point. That day is meant for all.

    Martin Luther King J.R.
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."

Your still color blind. Because were honoring an african-american man doesn't mean that it's an "only african-american day."

if that's the case, then should I ignore President's Day? i mean, i'm Arican American.. Presidents Day is a "White" holiday.. or should i try to admire what they stood for.. and what they tryed to get across?

You know.. i love it when stereotypes control the minds of my peers..

it shows racism is alive and well.. hell.. not only alive but it's being well-fed..

oh well.. can't change the world.. everyone can keep their views.. as long as your respectful about the way you convey them, i have no problems..

How is presidents day a white holiday? Presidents day is an American Holidy and unless you consider American White then it is not directed towards white people.
