I think without weapons there wouldn't be any threat of mass destruction.
Maybe weapons aren't entirely useless, but the amount of money spent on weapons that bring nothing but more chaos, is far more greater then the amount of money spent on space research without purpose.

Besides, space research is good to find a new environment, because weapons will destroy this one, one day.

ps. i know you probably disagree, but we all have our own opinion, and i'm not willing to convince you of mine this time. i had enough discussion about weapons and their usefullness.

Don't give me that crap.. i'm not trying to change your opinion, i'm just pointing out how lame it is.

Without weapons, humans wouldn't have survived, FACT.
If you're going to open up a discussion about weapons, be specific, just saying "weapons" every time is useless.
Space reseach is good, but not if we haven't solved all (or the major ones) problemes on earth, what use has it got invastigating planets we'll never even reach? I just looked it up, every space shuttle costs about $1.7 billion. + All the people having to work, all the prepartions, all the fuel, all the research costs etc.
Thats ridiculous, seeing as there are so many problemes that need money.

And I agree, weapons like atom bombs, chemical weapons, exploding bombs etc. are all over the top, they should be destroy as soon as possible.

But don't ever say people don't need weapons.

Were never going to solve all the problems on earth and a lot of them stem from different reasons than money. So we should do what humans have been doing since our existance and go and explore. Space research and exploration has had a lot of benefits for us on earth.

The money should go to more important things, not towards finding crap we don't even know how to visit yet.

All the research done at this point, doesn't have to be researched in the future. If they start researching things when they need it, then it'll be too late anyway.

If no-one ever researched space before, then we wouldn't know how vast it is, and we wouldn't know that we needed a different kind of fuel, we wouldn't know that some planets are filled with usable materials, we wouldn't have this conversation because there were no sattelites, we wouldn't have tv, internet or gps, we wouldn't know the sun would die eventually and that without a sun, life on earth would be impossible, we would simply die alltogether without knowing why, how or when, and without the possibility to move elsewhere to prevent our extinction.

Life without space exploration and space-research would be very different from what it is now.
The money spent on space-research and stuff might sound a lot, but compared to other things it's practically nothing. Space-research is usefull for the future, some other researches like the research on games and agression, or research about the average income per country, or research on improving ammunition aren't usefull at all, not now, not in history not in the future. So they could use the money for those researches for other more usefull researches like core-fusion (or other clean energysources), restoring the flora and fauna on earth and how to change a planets atmosphere to make it habitable to sustain life.
Yes, THAT kind of research is what we need, not the research on how to get more oil from the earth, or research on filters to reduce the amount carbonmonoxide spilled out by factories. If you want to improve things you need to change things at the source, not halfway, that will only delay the process instead of preventing it.

Morv, could you please share your thoughts about what usefull research you are referring to?

Yeah they probably thought that 60 years ago before we went to space. I don't think finding a planet that could possibly support life and could possibly show that were not so unique in this universe is crap. Every single one of these discoveries reveals even more about the universe and humanity itself.
