DO Save often, its not uncommon for photoshop to freeze or encounter errors. DONT Follow tutorials 100%. Add something new, dont use the same renders, colors etc as the tutorial states.
DON'T: Use bad/LQ screencaps as renders. Oversharpen the final product. Cram too much images into one graphic. Do: Try to be innovative.
DO save every thing you make in a psd as well as your perfered file type (jpg png etc.). Look at you creation 10-15mins after finishing it just to make sure you like it. After you save your psds any layers you thought about deleteing make them visable see how they look. play with settings etc. Make YOUR tags to YOUR likeing dont worry about the mainstream unless you want to. DONT Delete layers, just make them invisable. Over use the same effects. DO NOT TRY TO MAKE A SIG FAST ALWAYS TAKE YOUR TIME. Theres alot more but most of them have already been posted. Now after I just said " dont Over use the same effects." my newist tag is well, take a look
well crap i can't edit mypost anymore. would it be possible to have a mod edit my post daily and keep the list up to date
Don't Make a new layer and apply the image and blur it on Lighten. It takes the quality away from the tag. Do Try to make a tag as less messy as possible. The less messy the more people will be attracted to it.
Always accept C&C, if someone has a good idea for your sig, try it out, if a lot of people feel negatively about a part of the sig then remove/fix it, I'm not saying conform to peer pressure but to follow advice
This is common sense, yet I see it being done all the time... DON'T Change some of the features of the image and call it your own. DO Give credit to the original author of the image if you copy their ideas closely. More along the lines of moral rather than 'tips' as such but useful nevertheless.
Disagree, you can always up the quality using the right techniques. for example take this sig by MI7 heres the image before the effects. then with the effects... DO place effect layers into groups, then turn off the visibility to see what looks good and what looks bad, go back and fix accordingly label your layers for reference later on DON'T make the subject too big in relation to the canvas size make the subject look like it's a floating head place two contrasting colors immediately next to each other (can someone confirm this?)
