download managers download several instances of the same file, and download em all at once. that's where you get the speed. It is easier to download 1mb split up in 200kb, than just 1mb. most sites block them tho. they say you can only download one file at a time.
Its also good for downloading files that have been uploaded in many parts so you can just copy all say 25 links and paste it into the program and it will download each one in order so you dont have to stay by your pc. I'm not going to say where you get those sorts of files from though lol. Anyways best is probably FlashGet.
