My moms Toshiba laptop has been inoperable for about a year now and my brother (having the same model) took the battery and ac adapter. I just got them back yesterday, powered up her laptop, and I got this message: A disk read error occured Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart _ Doesn't that mean there was a hard drive failure? If so is there any way I can fix it, either to use the laptop or just to use the hard drive for my Xbox 360? If I got an SATA to USB adapter, sold here, couldn't I just format it when I connect it to my PC? We do have a warranty from Circuit City and we've sent it to them twice but they don't know jack. That warranty was a rip off.
i do beleive the HDD in the xbox is a small form factor laptop HDD. i'd advise you to taqke it to circuit city and requet a complete replacement. Dude you paid for a warranty. BITCH AND BITCH. Get their manager out, make a scene.
hmmmmmm.....sounds like a plan..... Plus I also just realized that if they can't fix it after 3 times then you can get a replacement. Plus, I know for a fact the the 360's hard drive is a 2.5" form factor, but I'd just use this for an extra hard drive. Sort of an oversized memory card.
again abuse their plan, i have a teacher who did the same thing. it's actualyl a decent plan, just get a new laptop alltogether.
do as he said bitch until they satisfy you. for my laptop i purchased a 3 year extended warrenty plan (acer ferrari 4000 series) and my sister got a hold of it and i said it fell off my table ( i really shoved it off after backing everything up) and got a brand new one. if you ahve a good warrenty don't be afraid to abusei t. you paid for it and you deserve it.
I don't think "abusing" it is the right thing to do ethically, but yeah, if you've paid for it and need to use it, use it to its full potential.
i used to work at CC. So they actually replace it is unfixiable, more than the laptop cost to fix, or if they have to repair the same part more than once. But your should be able ot fix the problem yourself. You jsut have to reinstall the OS on it. the discs come with toshibas. Also they will make you give them the laptop and including all the parts ...ie. hard drive. If you get it replace so you won't be able to use it for your xbox360.
I don't think its the OS thats causing it. It sounds like a hardware problem. You can do it yourself but it would cost money to. If you want to spend the money for a good HDD fixing program, I would suggest SpinRite at http://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm If for some reason they want to charge you, you have to buy a new HDD, or you want to keep your data (chances are they will probably format. I do not know if they will back-up or anything). SpinRite will fix the drive without having to format. It could be windows though so you could try that. But I dont think it is since it is a Disk Read Error. I would say first, take it to CC, ask them what the plan to do and if your data will be saved or if they can do it without formatting. If they say no, is your data that important? If it is I would go with SpinRite. Its $90 but you can decide if the data is that important. If you do get SpinRite, I suggest you run it every month or so, and when the drive errors increase a lot, its time for a new drive. Now if you don't want SpinRite and want to save your data, you could try repairing windows, but don't be surprised if you find some stuff not working Hope that helps
If he has the recovery discs he do a recovery and still keep his files. Usually disc read errors are from corrupted files/sectors. Overwriting the sectors/files will fix the problem.
